Help with unresponsive buyer

So I sold an item and a day after it sold the buyer contacted me and told me to ship it to an uncormirmed address so i opened a case. But now he hasn't accepted the cancelation and still hasn't paid after 2 days, how do I just cancel the transaction all together??

What "request" did you open??

Please tell us exactly what you did, step by step.

You Already cancelled. You don’t need to call eBay or do anything else, it takes 10 days for the cancellation to go through. You don’t need to call and get it closed in your favor, that’s not how it works. If the buyer doesn’t confirm they were refunded or that they didn’t pay within 10 days it closes on its own and your fees are credited 🙂

@missjen831

Jen ... cancels no longer take 10 days ... a buyer doesn't even get a chance to "accept" or "deny" anymore. It is virtually immediate. The old wording is still there on the notification that the buyer gets, though, which is confusing 😞

Just an FYI, a seller does not need a buyer to accept a cancellation. At one time that may have been policy, but not any longer. Here's links on how to cancel a transaction and how to open an Unpaid Item Dispute, should you need to know for the future. Good luck on your current situation.

The process still takes 10 days though. eBay sometimes asks the buyer to confirm they were refunded or that they didn’t pay. And some buyers are asked to accept or deny! Supposedly it’s only when the cancellation is initiated on other eBay sites but I’ve seen it with US sellers!

But you shouldn't have cancelled it.Since the buyer hasn't paid yet, when he contacted you about sending it to another address you should have just said you could do that as long as he entered that address as the shipping address when he paid. Sellers have to send the package to the address used at the time of payment in order to have protection for an item not received.  They do not have to send it to the buyer's ebay or paypal address.

That's exactly what I would have done. It's not at all uncommon for buyers to want their packages shipped to their work address. My brother has his mail order stuff shipped to his office all the time, if he can't be sure that his wife will be home to accept delivery. Nothing sinister at all about that, as long as the address is the ship-to address in the transaction info. You're still covered by Seller Protection.

This is what happens when people don't take the time to learn how things actually work. They panic and they make panicked decisions.

So basically, if somebody buys one of my items, and wants it shipped to an address that is different than let's say the address they have listed with eBay. It is all well and good as long as they have added that address to the list of addresses in their PayPal account? Is this correct?

Yes.  I do it a lot when I'm purchasing gifts for family or friends and want the items shipped to them at their address.

Help with unresponsive buyer

OP really never had a reason to cancel the sale~~the buyer had not paid yet so there was no "problem with the buyers address".  He didn't have an address to ship to because there was no payment through pay pal.  If he had just told the buyer that yes, he could send to whatever address the buyer entered with their pay pal payment he may have gotten paid.

Since the OP never even had a designated address to ship to he should look at his seller dashboard and check to make sure he didn't get a defect for filing a fake cancellation.  How does the OP know if the buyer hasn't contested the cancellation?

I have items shipped to my mom & my daughter all the time.  I'd be more than slightly upset if a seller cancelled because I was having the item shipped to an alternate address other than my own.

In Post #6 the OP stated that the buyer has now marked it as "payment sent". Can the buyer still pay by PayPal even though they have marked it as payment sent? Or is the buyer trying to get the seller to ship it without payment?

Everyone should always check their PayPal accounts to be sure the payments they expect are actually right in those accounts before anything is shipped anywhere.

I always use PayPal as my source for the proper address to use for shipping.

Yes. As long as the address is the one associated with the payment. (Not in a message after payment)

When a buyer changes the address at checkout, the eBay ship-to will be that address, and that address is the one that will be looked at for Seller Protection for INR and/or Credit Card chargebacks.

It is also the address that the Shipping Calculator will use ... which is why you really shouldn't send an invoice to a non-payer ... it locks the shipping rate in to their default address.

It is also why the shipping FVF doesn't get charged until payment ... because eBay doesn't know what the shipping charge will be until the buyer actually pays.

Why the buyer marked it as Payment Sent is unclear, but that's purely window dressing. If he hasn't paid yet, then the seller doesn't ship. As for the situation as the OP described it, I would have replied by telling the buyer to be sure to add the desired Ship-To: address as an alternate address in his account, and then select that one when making his payment. It would populate your Shipping form automatically, and you would ship to that address.

As I know I've mentioned before, I have one regular buyer who alternates between Florida and the Virgin Islands at different parts of the year (must be nice), and I never know which location I'll be shipping to until his payment comes in.

They can also add the new address on eBay when they pay.

They don’t need to add the address to their eBay OR PayPal account. There’s an edit button next to the Ship To field at checkout. They need to click on that and type in the address they want it shipped to.

That address is now on his account  as an alternate shipping address and the next time they check out, that address will be in the ship to field. Click on edit and all his other addresses will be listed and he can choose the one he wants.
