I was once a long time power seller here on eBay. Sadly, in the past I got burned twice selling high valued antiques by scammers and lost hundreds of dollars. Because of that, I no longer sell here anymore. With that being said, since I am a just a buyer here now, I still feel connected to the Ebay seller forum and Ebay in general. So as a fellow online seller (on another venue that starts with an E) and as a buyer on eBay, I thought I would still post here because we are all in this together.
I went to ship something that I sold on the other venue and got sticker shock! I sell antiques and most of my items only fit in boxes over 12X12X12. USPS is really getting really ridiculous and out of hand!! They now raised the prices of Parcel Select (Parcel Post) by messing with the ballon rate of anything over a certain size and now it is just as expensive if I sell to someone in my own state on the east coast and also if I ship it all the way to the other side of the country. I nearly fell off my chair when an item that was only a few pounds in a 14x18x14 box was going to cost my buyer $54!! It used to be anywhere from $22-$38 which was outrageous at that price as it was. Another item I just sold going to the midwest that weighs approximately 8 pounds that needs to go in a box that is 20x12x14 is costing my buyer $76.16 for Parcel Select!! This is seriously going to take a huge toll on my business. If an item is only $20-$50, I will no longer get sales now unless the item is extremely rare or valuable. The same goes for buying any items that fit in a box larger than a cube.
What are sellers like me going to do to stay in business? We all know that buyers want Fast and Free shipping because Amazon has spoiled a lot of buyers, but how many of us can afford to offer Free Shipping at these prices? Also, the new online sales tax laws that have been passed recently are only going to make buyers even less likely to buy more expensive items too now. I can stop selling larger items but, is this now going to limit my inventory to small items? Even if something is smaller, most of the items I sell are fragile antiques that need lots of bubble wrap and padding which will make the item larger thus needing a box over a cube (12X12X12).
As a seller this is really troublesome, but I am a buyer too. I am noticing the antique items I like to buy here on ebay are now showing astronomical shipping costs. For example I saw an antique teddy bear I wanted to buy, but the shipping was $48! As soon as I saw that I hit the back button. The sad part was that price was not even for Priority Mail. It was for Parcel Select. This is going to be very damaging to buyers and sellers alike.
I would possibly use Fedex if it was cheaper, but in the past when I used FedEx, it is slow as molasses and they lost 5 of my packages in one year, which included delivering my packages to the wrong house. In my eyes UPS is not much better but the USPS is a better service. I guess anyone that sells or buys something over 12X12X12 is pretty much screwed. I guess I needed to rant. This is going to hurt a lot of people, buyers and sellers alike.

Maybe if the volume of packages drops, they will lose less money
Lol. Sadly that is so true.
Not only do they not make any money, they are 3 BILLION DOLLARS IN DEBT!

I have them 😃 but they aren't great for plates lol I think I've used 1 or 2 since I got them 1.5 years ago.
However, they were good boxes when I moved and did some stuff myself - quite manageable.

This week I had four potential sales. Out of the four, three different people contacted me and asked me why shipping was so high and inquired if I would offer free shipping or reduced shipping costs. I couldn't do that because I would not be able to absorb the costs plus pay fees. Also the new sales tax rules are killing my business as well because my items are all over $100 and tax really adds a lot to the final price of my items.
Needless to say, I lost three sales when I could not find much cheaper shipping alternatives for people that wanted to buy my higher priced antiques. The 4th person did not care and promptly paid $76 to ship a 5 pound package that was balloon rated because it needed to go in a 18x14x16 box. And this outrageous price was for just Parcel Select. Priority Mail was only a dollar or two more. The morons at USPS are going to price themselves out of business and price me out of business along with them. UPS or FedEx is not a good fit for me because my items are fragile and I have had a lot of issues in the past with FedEx losing my packages or misdelivering them and UPS smashing my boxes. USPS was always the more gentler way to send my items and got to the person without being lost of misdelivered.
Been selling on the internet since 1998 and never had so many complaints about shipping costs before. I just lost a $225 sale today because a 4 pound item in a 20X12x14 box was going to cost them over $50 to ship. The buyer wanted me to reduce my price by $50. Couldn't afford to do it. My God! I am going to need to have a fire sale to get rid of all my items that would need to go in a box over 12x12x12". This is soul crushing.

I see it only getting much, much worse. One thing somewhat holding down the cost of shipping UPS & FedEx now is the USPS rates.
>>The Postal Service Lost $3.9 Billion Last Year<<
on more volume, they lost more...
Maybe online local selling will gain more traction, people looking to avoid selling fees, the tax man, shipping fees, wait time, etc. I could see an uber type app where people deliver packages locally. None of that would help people who live in rural areas though.

Why are you paying $50.00+ to ship 4# 20x12x14 package by parcel? Do not buy your parcel label here on ebay, they are overpriced. That 4# package can be shipped today from CA to NJ for $19.70 retail parcel IF you take it to the post office and purchase your retail parcel label over the counter. If you do not believe it, go to the USPS click n ship web site and enter ALL your package information. You will get prices for all the shipping services USPS offers including retail parcel, which can only purchased over the counter at any post office. I have verified this myself at our local post office where they confirmed that retail parcel prices were not increased, only parcel select labels printed online.
Your 5# 18x14x6 package can be shipped from CA to NJ for $23.02 retail parcel if taken to the post office. These lower rates currently apply to retail parcel packages shipped to zones 5-9. I know this sounds unbelievable, but I assure you it is true. Somehow USPS exempted retail ground from the new increases that took effect 6/23.
I hope this helps you with your shipping costs for now.

Just got a question about one of four large vintage pitchers I have for sale. Box is 18x12x10. Question was "Is shipping really $49?" My answer was "Welcome to the new shipping rates that started last Sunday. I think I'll take all four pitchers out to the trash and crash them into it one by one." I'll eventually put them out at my next garage sale.

As said in another post like this one the other day, U.S.P.S may have written their own epitaph? My opinion but with the online sales tax no one is going to pay for both shipping and sales tax if they can just get their stuff locally?
This was done by design. In my opinion, USPS is struggling in their handling of larger packages. I believe the larger package size shipped via USPS, the more likely the item will be damaged. USPS carriers detest large oversized packages.
I prefer FedEx for my packages greater than 12x12x12 at 5lbs of more. It is my belief USPS new pricing is to discourage senders from using that service.

I really wish eBay would pass along to its sellers the better rate they receive from USPS and FedEx. I was checking out an item on another site to purchase and I used their shipping calculator; the cost was significantly lower than I had expected. The other site appears to be getting a huge volume discount rate from USPS and FedEx. As a concerned active Seller on eBay, "this" is making us less competition
I predict eBay's online sales will be reduced to only those items that can be shipped first class, and/or packages under 12x12x12 and under 8-9lbs. The cost of postage will drive what is being sold online!

PS: Because there is no such thing as Free Shipping, the Free Shipping gimmick will not solve the problem, because the price of the item will need to go up to cover the increase in shipping.

"I prefer FedEx for my packages greater than 12x12x12 at 5lbs of more".
You are lucky FedEx has been a good service for you. Here on Long Island anytime something I buy is shipped via FedEx, my packages always seem to be misdelivered to the wrong address or my items arrive broken or smashed. I have a way better track record with USPS Priority Mail and my fragile antiques that I buy always come intact. FedEx for me has been a horrendous service. This is why I am terrified to ship the fragile valuable antiques I sell via FedEx.

It's very sad right?! I just got another inquiry today from a buyer bashing my shipping costs for a $225 antique item that needs to go in a long, but slender box. She couldn't believe it was going to cost her $58 to ship to her for the cheapest shipping method via USPS. She asked me for free shipping or for me to lower my price significantly and told her I couldn't afford to do it. I explained to her about the USPS price increase and she said "well I guess you just lost a sale".
I am struggling to pay for my daughter's college tuition, and this week alone I lost of $800 in sales because every one of the customers who was set to buy my items ran for the hills when they saw the outrageous shipping costs. My items are all fragile and in the past I have had a high incidence of damage claims whenever I used UPS or FedEx. Using USPS I have never once had a breakage or damage claim out of hundreds of shipments. If I could trust FedEx or UPS for my rare, fragile antiques I would probably get a much cheaper rate than USPS, but I do not trust them with my packages.
These high shipping costs are the final nail in my coffin. I am so disheartened.

It's really sad for all of us sellers and buyers. To be honest I was going to buy a $15 item on ebay the other day, but when I saw shipping costs were $15 I went straight to Amazon and bought the same item and got free shipping. This is going to hurt a lot of ebay sellers and sales are going to start plummeting. The USPS is going to put us all out of business if this keeps up.

Wow! That is actually a really good idea. I can picture and Uber type delivery service making sense for local sales and it will help keep people safer than possibly being murdered by a CraigsList type killer in a dark parking lot, lol.
Who is going to pay these delivery drivers?
An Uber to my periodontist (12 miles) is $20, one way, without a tip.
