Hello,
I read this forum a lot but this is my first post. I received my first Transaction Dispute today, and I just wanted to make sure I am doing everything correctly.
The item was a Japanese tea set which sold for $23 yesterday. I had several positive exchanges with the buyer through messages about how much he liked the piece and please be careful wrapping it, etc, and I dropped it off at the Post Office this afternoon. Just a few hours later, I received a notification that the buyer submitted a payment dispute through his credit card for “transaction not recognized.” I wrote the buyer a very polite message stating I had received the chargeback and perhaps he was mistaken and could he please reverse the dispute. He responded that he there was no information on the charge on his PayPal statement and he thought it was a mistake. Now that he knows it was his purchase he would “take care of it right now.”
eBay of course wants proof of delivery as response to the dispute, but of course I don’t have that as it probably hasn’t even left my local post office yet. I have until 8/21 to respond, but from reading these posts I know that the chargeback disputes never go in favor of the seller.
What I thought I would do is if I don’t hear anything else by Tuesday afternoon I would try to do a package intercept; if that is successful I will close the case and refund the buyer. I know the cost for intercept plus postage will probably equal the price of the item, but it is kind of the principle for me...I just don’t want him to have it if he didn’t pay for it.
and of course I’ll put I’m on my BBL. any other suggestions? Thanks for all the assistance I’ve been getting just by reading everyone’s posts.

Geez... a $20 loss (dispute) -or- a $15 loss (intercept). For a $23 item. I dread the day I have a chargeback. Good luck to you.

Upload the tracking you have as eBay has requested

You could message e-Bay on Facebook for Business and ask for an extension to reply to the chargeback as the messages between you and buyer should all be there. As the CC initiates the chargeback, the buyer likely cannot cancel it, but he should be able to contact his CC company to advise to withdraw same.

E-bay, under the circumstances, might extend the time frame for the response to the chargeback. I would at least ask. Good luck. This issue of the charges not adding up for a Buyer is becoming more common place as the reference on the charge is often confusing and the Buyer seems to only remember spending $23, not $23 + shipping + tax.

...if you want to intercept your package, better do it NOW through usps.com as it will be caught up during processing...
...don't wait until Tuesday when the package is already in transit...

This is become an all too common problem because of the way eBay passes information to the cc company or PayPal regarding the purchase. Not sure if they are going to improve this anytime soon but it is causing a LOT of headaches for sellers and confusion among buyers. Ironically it is IMPOSSIBLE to buy anything from eBay since they do not sell anything so why post something on a buyers cc statement saying "eBay" followed by nothing more than a bunch of numbers.
