Am I able to "go dark" on my items for sell when I go out of town or do I have to purchase a monthly store to do that?

Vacation mode is only available to store sellers.

You can extend your handling time if you'll only be gone for a few days. If you'll be gone longer than that you're probably better off ending your listings and relisting after you return.

You could also use the out of stock option in seller preferences/site preferences. If you set all of your items to 0, they will still be active but they can't be seen by buyers.
