Global Shipping Program expensive for buyers and Opting out Risks?

Recently I have lost three international orders that I know of because of the shipping charges with the global shipping program and import fees. I used to have no problem shipping USPS First Class International in that program and sell abroad. Now the program only uses Priority International as far as I know which is much more expensive. I am concerned about the impact on my business, and am considering opting out on my listings and shipping myself first class with insurance. My question is how have other sellers addressed this and what the experience was opting out, pros and cons. I am afraid that the buyer may get the item, and find they have an import fee they thought they wouldn't get when receiving it, not having the same security, and other related problems. Any insight on the matter would be appreciated.

I have never and will never use GSP.

About 60% of my sales go overseas, I ship virtually all of these orders without tracking, I get about 1 INR claim in 500 shipments.

The real risk in opting out of GSP is that you will make more sales and make more money!

The downside of opting out is that it requires a light amount of extra work (customs form) and you may have to do a bit more hand-holding for the anxious overseas buyer who doesn't understand that it takes longer to arrive from the other side of the planet than from the city just up the road.

Most of what you are currently selling is not particularly well suited to GSP.

For example when you ship one of your pipes to Canada, (the sub $50 variety) 90% (or more) if sent by mail they will not be taxed at entry but if sent via GSP they will be taxed 100% of the time. The shipping portion of GSP is on the high side for your lightweight pipes this is mostly because buyers are paying for the SC to KY portion and then the KY to destination portion but also due to the averaging GSP does since they often do not know the exact weight/dimensions of the item.

There are also many buyers who simply pass on any type of GSP listing, it's not generally faster, it's not generally cheaper so there is no incentive for buyers to think highly of it unless there is no other alternative option for a particular item.

I have shipped international from time to time and I always opted out of GSP.  I can save my buyers a fair amount of money, especially if it's a larger, heavy item.  Also, I guess I'm a little paranoid from some of the horror stories I've seen online where the seller has done a fantastic job packing a delicate valuable item and then GSP repacks it getting rid of the "extra, unnecessary" packing material and item arrives looking like it went through a war.

I count myself as very fortunate in that my overseas buyers were all great to deal with and experienced so they knew how long things take and that items can be held up in customs through no fault of the seller. As for the paperwork, not really any harder than shipping in the U.S.

Don't be intimidated by it - there are a lot of nice international customers out there. Good luck!

It is a matter of whether or not you are willing to take the risks and put up with the aggravation of international shipping directly.  If you are, I would suggest opting out of the GSP program.

If, however, you are not and wouldn't be selling internationally if you had to ship directly, by all means, use the GSP program.  The alternative is to not sell internationally.

I was in the GSP for years because I didn't want the hassle of lost packages or customs forms and maybe got a sale every few months. I opted out in Sept and started doing international shipping on my own and have completed 20 sales with no problems.

@pipeclub,

The others who have replied have all given good reasons not to use the GSP.  If you are not familiar with international shipping check the USPS site to see the services they offer. The customs forms are not hard to fill out, and you can down load them from the USPS site, and from ebay if an item sells to a foreign buyer.

As a seller I will not use the GSP, because of the costs to my buyers.  As a Buyer, I will not buy from sellers who use it.  Why should I pay customs fees, on items costing less than $800 when if they are shipped through different services there is no fees?

Any insight on the matter would be appreciated.

There are two advantages to a seller who uses the GSP.  First,  seller is protected from INR claims from the internatioinal buyer once the item shows "delivered" to the Pitney Bowes center in the US.  Second, the seller is protected for SNAD claims of "broken in shipment" to the international buyer.

Understand that either of these claims will come through to the seller, who must then convince an eBay CS rep that they were indeed GSP sales.

It is also very important that a seller know that there is still no SNAD protection for other claims of not as described, and the seller is responsible for funding the shipping costs with delivery confirmation in advance for a return from another country.  This can be expensive, and the same applies if you use the GSP or ship directly.  As with other returns, it will not matter much what is returned. It could be your item or not., but you will be refunding anyway.

A seller's choices if this should a 'not as described' claim occur are to send money to the buyer to return the item, or refund and let them keep the merchandise for free.  This is the same if the GSP is used or not.

Keep in mind that for larger heavier parcels, the GSP costs to the buyer may even be less. Complaints from buyers are typically related to small parcels, and those with a cost below the requirements for additional duty/customs/etc. charges.  Since the shipments typically entered the EU through the UK, German buyers were complaining that since Pitney Bowes refused to say what part of the payment was for shipping and what was for duty or taxes, they were forced to pay the related customs fees again.

This might be something to consider in light of the new economic issues related to the UK and EU happening now.

I use the GSP for about everyone but Canada, Germany, UK, Italy, France & Spain...you know, all the countries with toilets and mail carriers you don't have to bribe.

Anyone in a country not in the GSP list can buy from me Global Express.

It's just the price of admission, if they don't like it they can go see another show.

Thanks for the help everyone! Great advice! I removed the global shipping option and it was cheaper, and nothing bad happened. I called ebay a number of times as I suspected a glitch because the program had worked well.  Recently I noticed global shipping was on a listing and everything was like it was before, so as I suspected there was a glitch that is now fixed....for the time being.

Oh no!

You called Ebay to tell them something is working fine? They must have said "this guy is crazy!" Smiley Very Happy

The majority of your listings are still showing that you use the gsp...I’m not sure if that’s what you want.

Just as a FYI....the term International Priority shipping on gsp listings is just a generic term, it isn’t USPS Priority.    The gsp uses various freight services to ship from Kentucky., they’ve never used USPS.

I've never used GSP, because the buyer ends up paying more money.

I have chosen carefully the countries I will ship to, and those I will definitely NOT ship to.

Glad you mentioned this as there are countries that it is not advisable to ship to.

As I Canadian buyer I refuse to buy from anyone using the Global Shipping Program.  Most Canadians feel the same way.  Most of my friends & family are just casual buyers & thought the ebay fee was mandatory on purchases so now I've mad a point of periodically reminding them to avoid it

I've seen many posts by Canadians who are vehemently against the GSP.
