Global Shipping Program (GSP) and eBay Recommendation For Only Items Over $50?

I have found numerous references in forums and discussion boards that eBay recommends (recommended?) that the Global Shipping Program (GSP) only be used for items valued/worth over $50.  However, I can't find any such wording from eBay itself.  Is that eBay advice now obsolete?  Or is that still the current recommendation?  I was just about to dip my toe into the international arena when I came across that.  As of now, I haven't used the GSP at all, so please forgive me if this is old discussion.  I did research it but couldn't find an answer.

Thanks in advance for the great help I always get here!

I just did global shipping on a 33 dollar item.....no problems.

The seller has a problem when the buyer gets really, REALLY ticked.   Because GSP charges VAT, TAX and any other fees.  Soooo, a $15CAN item shipped through GSP is going to cost more in fees and shipping costs than the item.  These costs aren't given to the buyer before they purchase, since it may be a domestic purchase.  And, the seller doesn't see these costs, either.  The seller just collects the cost of shipping to KY (or free shipping).

Regular USPS shipping doesn't charge all of the extra fees - they leave that responsibility to the folks on the other end.

Otherwise, no, no problem for the seller since they just have to pay to get it to KY.

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

Most international customers don't bother with items that are less than $50. As soon as you tell them that you use GSP, they'll bow out of any discussions because it's EXPENSIVE. The buyer pays for it, and people HATE PAYING FOR SHIPPING.

Even expensive items can get smacked with large international shipping bills. I had an item for $600, someone international asked if I would ship to Australia. Of course, I said sure!, but I'll be using GSP to cover myself. The buyer looked into it, would cost them $80 to get the item. I even offered him a $50 discount, and he backed out.

So yeah, there ya go. That, plus international fraud is why I no longer ship international on Ebay. Sellers pay return shipping, even on international orders. Yeah, I'm not eating shipping twice to get an item back - and international buyers know it.
