Gift Card Dispute

I just sold a gift card and now the buyer is saying they don't recognize the transaction. I provided the buyer all the info on the card, so of course the card is drained now. I know people will say that I should have shipped the item, but they could have done the same claim anyway. I do wonder if anyone has any experience with this. Tried to respond to claim, but it wants shipping info when there is none. I went on Ebay chat and they recorded all my info. I think they are disputing through their bank. I wonder what my chances are. Am I just SOL on this case or can I possibly win? Seems like I am at the whim of the banking institution and they will prob find in favor of their customer.

You probably won't win. No tracking.

So I am assuming the buyer opened a CC chargeback? If so eBay generally handles these without any seller input since it is concerned with the purchase of the item not the delivery and eBay already has the information to provide to the CC company showing the purchase of the item.

If the buyer turns around and opens a INR then as farmalljr mentioned you are likely to loose since you do not have any proof that the item was delivered.

Gift Card Dispute

This has soured me on the whole process. Had not sold in a couple yrs. They seemingly have changed everything. Used to be a lot easier. Not sure if it's just gift cards or all items, but I hate that ebay holds your money for several days. I was told by ebay to mark it shipped even with a gift card with no shipping involved. As I said I think this person would have done this no matter if I shipped or not. If anyone has other sites that I can sell gift cards, I am all ears. Used to do cardcash.com, but the last few months they've been declining every sell order. Giftcash.com can't be trusted either. Just at a loss now.

The Home Depot Gift cards you sold probably violate eBay policy. You may want to read through the following eBay policy on selling gift cards. For sure the electronic delivery of the card information did. Not sure where or how you obtained the cards but it looks like you took a loss on the cards based on what they sold for and what their value was. Probably an item you could have easily sold on a local forum.

What is the policy?

  • Sellers can list the following types of gift cards:
    • eBay gift cards that are sold by authorized sellers
    • Collectible gift cards with no redemption value, as long as the listing specifies that there's no monetary amount on the card
    • Gift cards must still be valid and unexpired. If there's an expiration date, it must be specified in the listing
  • The total face value of all gift card listings from a seller at any given time must be $500 or less
  • The following types of gift cards aren't allowed:
    • Electronically delivered gift cards from sellers who engage in high-risk activities
    • Prepaid credit cards (or money cards) from American Express, Discover, Mastercard, or Visa
    • Store or merchandise credit in the form of a receipt

Gift Card Dispute

The gift card was a physical gift card. Not an electronically delivered gift card. So it qualified under the third item on the list. Not worried that this was not approved from ebay. It certainly was. I don't need to be lectured on how to sell items on ebay when I've sold for over 20 yrs on this.

It may have been a physical card but from what  I gathered from your posting you did not physically send the item you simply sent the buyer the information on the card. Gray area as far as digital delivery but the item was not shipped.

You asked for advice but since you seem to have the answers from 20 years of experience and the 388 items you have sold in that timeframe I will leave you to your resolution.

I am fine with advice. That's exactly why I came to the forum. I don't like that you were implying I did something improper on this site. I value my reputation on here, so I take exception to that. I talked to more than one ebay agent on the issue and they did not say I did anything wrong. I will just leave it like that. We will see what happens in the next week or so.

You mentioned you have not sold in a couple of years. You should be aware that the eBay CS has become abysmal and they will tell you what you want to hear to get you off the phone which may include lying to you. Not implying you did anything "improper" on the site but there is a conflict in your listing. Your listing indicates shipping using USPS ground advantage but you counter that in your item description by what appears as digital delivery. You are probably fine with regards to the chargeback of purchase not recognized but you will loose any INR or NAD that the buyer may open.

It may not be an improper listing  but this is a scammers dream come true.
