So I have a medallion. When I listed it, I thought it was pewter. There's nothing in the box to indicate that it's silver (not in English anyway). It sold for $30.
When packing, I grabbed the inventory tag on it to indicate how much the B&M store expects to receive for the medallion and all they noted was "Ag" (their code for me to weigh it and pay out silver price).
Perplexed because this thing doesn't *look* silver, I researched it. Found it out it's sterling silver with an antiqued finish (hence the pewter appearance).
It was a small box, I'm thinking "it can't weigh that much" and I was expecting to find out it had $45-50 in silver in it... no, it's like 4 ounces, and when I calculated the silver owed to the store by their formula I came up with $78. So basically I owe them $48 more than it sold for.
You know ever year I mess something up really well... I haven't done that in 2020 yet, well I have now. Normally when I do something this dumb I just sell it for less than it's worth, but still make good money because we didn't pay much. (Like when the token we paid 25 cents for sold for $5 because I goofed, and it should have been $35... it was a mess up, but we didn't lose money).
The $48 is coming out of my pocket, that's the agreement, since he has no control over what I do and I'm trusted to make responsible decisions, I'm also expected to pay up when the decisions I make are wrong.

I'm confused!
I looked at your listings - coins, medallions, stamps seem to the bulk.
I don't understand these comments: I was expecting to find out it had $45-50 in silver in it... no, it's like 4 ounces, and when I calculated the silver owed to the store by their formula I came up with $78. So basically I owe them $48 more than it sold for.

What store? Are you not the store? You have been on eBay for over 5 years. You have over 2,000 listings active.

I sell things on consignment for several other people. Since it's on consignment, they get paid when the item sells. One of my customers is the brick & mortar store where I work part time. That's the "store" I was talking about in my post.
My "eBay Store" is just the platform I use to sell other people's things. (And yes, some things are my own, but the bulk belong to other people).

dump them! You have your own business / operation here correct?. You set the rules and guidelines!
Why should you owe them? As others have posted, an agreement should have been established. You and the customer come to an agreement on numbers. Say starting asking price, lowest price accepted, and your fee just to make it simple for this post.
I still don't follow how a brick & mortar store is asking you to sell for them. They should be able to afford their own website and sell.
I still have a feeling this post is just to advertise your listings.

I sell to a niche market, and I can count on one hand the number of people in here that have any interest in what I sell. If you think I'm advertising my listings, you should apply that blanket statement to everyone else who posts a story here about something they did.
The brick & mortar store only sells to people in Canada. I have a USA business address and USA bank account. I can reach 300 million people that they can't reach, and the reason they can't reach them is issues with currency conversion and shipping from Canada (I ship from New York).
Also the owner of the B&M store is a good friend of mine and he asked for my help selling about 7 years ago as a favour. We have an established agreement, which is why I'm on the hook for remitting money to collected because I didn't list it for enough to begin with.

Way I see things you did your job to the best of your ability and that is all you are responsible for, you did a fine job selling it for under retail since you still made a profit, this actually helps increase your future sales. Thank you for being a conscientious employee, have a nice day.
