Have you ever wondered why you see the same television commercial over and over again, day after day? Have you ever wondered why the sponsor don't just show the commercial once every 30 days? That's because repetition works!
Yes, I've read all the arguments against the new GTC policy for fixed listings......the sense of urgency that the 3-5-7 day listings create.....and I completely agree with all of those comments. But, I think another, and even better reason for getting rid of this suicidal new policy of Ebay is that most experienced buyers do not search by "best match". After all, who is ebay to decide what is a good match for me, as I look for antiques and collectibles and ebay wouldn't have a clue what is the right match for me. So, I search by "newly listed". I can't tell you how many times I have seen an item on ebay, didn't buy it, but then it came up the next week, or the week following that and I decided to finally pull the trigger. With the new policy, that item wouldn't come up again for another 30 days! That's hardly an example of an efficient marketing approach. Now, in addition to my buying on ebay, I also sell. What this new policy means is that for all those people who search for particular types of antiques and collectibles using "newly listed", if I don't get that sale right away, then there is a good shot no one is going to look at my item again for almost four more weeks, as it lingers in the bowels of ebay. That makes absolutely no sense. Almost all experienced buyers of antiques and collectables use the "newly listed" option. I check the listing for what interests me three or four times a day. But, I never look down past the items that I already saw earlier that day when I last checked newly listed items. So, for a buyer like me.....and again, almost all buyers of antiques and collectibles search using "newly listed", I'm not going to see that item again for 30 days. There are been many times I did not buy something the first time I saw it on ebay, or even the second time, but then I rethought the item and jumped on it using the Buy it Now figure the third of fourth time. From a seller's perspective.....and that's the perspective from which I am writing this.....that's the kiss of death. The new reality is that with this new policy, if an item I list with a fixed price doesn't sell in the first day or two, it's going to sit there and rot on ebay for 28 more days until it finally comes to the top of the list. Ebay, what were you thinking? Do you have anyone on your staff that actually buys antiques and collectibles? Anyone in this field knows that we have to check the listings multiple times a day to get first crack at an item, but we don't have to look at anything older than a day or two, since we would have seen anything older already. So, this new policy is going to be a knife in the back for almost everyone who sells the way I do .......put the listing up to renew every Sunday night. Get the item in front of people's faces often. After all, that's the exact same approach that every major advertiser uses when running the same commercial continuously. This is so simple ebay. How could you have missed it?
The bottom line is that when sellers sell less, then ebay makes less money. This decision is not only going to cost sellers a fortune, but it's going to cost ebay millions, as well. The people who thought this up at ebay have absolutely no idea how "professional buyers" search ebay. They're under the impression that every buyer is a casual buyer who will look at every item in every search result every time. That is just not the case. Ebay, this is the worst decision you have ever made!

I am with you, I evolved over the years as a small seller and manage to keep about 350 listings going. Figured out how to do this in my spare time and it was working well. Now after 15 years of selling and a stellar record, I must contemplate exiting. Not to mention I plow all my sales into eBay purchases.
One question - can you end multiple listings at once or must I go in and do them one by one?

i really don't like ebay rolling over things that might not be getting views. they falsely claim they are doing it to help you sell items. well bottom line is it isn't helping it's hurting when i have to do extra things to cancel something that never should have been set. there should be an option. i don't deal in items of mass quantities. the things i sell are just 1 single item. and i don't want that item rolling over if it doesn't get views. i really don't see how this helps anyone but ebay. they can lie all they want, but people always had the option when creating a listing to use gtc so how can they lie and say it's what people wanted. who are those people let me guess people that own and work for ebay

I fully agree with you and until they reverse this I won't be buying or selling anything on eBay.

The new GTC is a DISASTER. It makes absolutely no sense for casual sellers like myself. I am forced to eliminate 75% listings and search for other ways to sell my items. I regret this after having great experience selling on ebay for many years.

See I think that as the seller it is MY JOB to be on top of my listings and pull the items myself. At some point you have to notice that some items are getting no views and have been listed for months without a nibble. "Some dogs just wont hunt."

Amen to all you said! I'd only thought about how horrible this is for a seller, but now realize that as a buyer - just like you pointed out - I am now debilitated from effectively using the search by new listings. As we all know, we don't get to vote on anything; new policies just pounce upon us. Perhaps the management will understand that this is a mistake if MANY people just revert to auction listings only, or just pack up their toys and leave.
This has become less and less fun with each passing year, due to new policies created by people who seem to have little understanding of how to make the customers (US!) happy. GTC is in the top three worst decisions ever, along with "Must use PayPal", and "No contact info available". I'm avoiding using the Buy It Now feature going forward unless this is changed back to the way it was.

Yes, GTC Makes No Sense For Anyone ..... Sellers, Buyers or eBay.
All it's going to do is clog up the system with items that barely get views or sales.
But eventually, when no-one lists items anymore, that problem will self-resolve (unlike many others on eBay that don't seem to get fixed).

I have ended many listings because of that motto. I keep track of how many views things get throughout the month, and if three months go by with the item getting very few views, I pull it. I just let a bunch of my remaining 30-day listings expire for this very reason. I may relist them at some point in the future, but right now, they were generating next to no interest and thus weren't worth keeping up.

I thought your post was very thoughtful and compelling. As I said elsewhere, my usual routine was put up a number of BIN listings on Sunday with a 7-day duration (I never had a store).
Last Sunday, I did my usual thing...uploading 25 listings as BIN ..using TurboLister. The duration again was 7 days. Imagine my shock today when I expected to see each listing with a few hours (in red) remaining showing up as GTC! No alert from TurboLister whatsoever when I listed the stuff a week ago. I should have known that something wasn't right because I did not record a sale the whole week.
I found your observation about buyer behavior interesting. That is, buyers check for "newly listed" items first. As a sometime buyer myself, I do the opposite; I check the listings are ending soon first. While I can't really identify with much of what you experienced , seasoned sellers are grappling with, your insights are very much appreciated. I thank you for that.
