Freight shipping? Ebay just doesn't get it. Why make it so hard?

Issue #1

Selling something shipped via freight. Ebay will not allow buy it now with shipping charges undeclared.

So have to get buyer info, change price to include shipping. What a pain

Issue #2

Believe it or not Ebay, freight companies REQUIRE email addresses and phone numbers when scheduling freight pickup and generating a bill of lading.

Yet you THREATEN charging fees (ON AN ITEM ALREADY BOUGHT AND PAID FOR)  and will not allow the sending of contact information.

Get over yourselves, we're not trying to screw you out of a commission, we are trying to GET BUSINESS DONE!!!!!!

I feel for you..

eBay does need to offer some kind of option for purchases such as this..

Sadly, for every honest seller such as yourself there are many that will try to take advantage of buyers without declared shipping..

I agree for freight shipping there should be an option & if the buyer is unhappy with final costs, an easy no-lose cancel on both sides.

The problem is not that you are trying to screw them out of  commission.

The problem is that countless thousands of sellers before you have.

Oh, gosh! You almost make it sound like that would take some actual WORK on your part. No way, man.

Sharing contact information between buyer and seller is perfectly acceptable AFTER the buyer has paid.

How do you expect them to pay for the item without knowing the shipping cost?   Why make it require two transactions?

As for the rest, if you're creative you can figure out how to make it work for you.

Thank you for the information, but you can keep the sarcasm, since it appears that either you don't sell much or don't have to deal with the problems of shipping something via freight.

Obviously you have NO idea how many requests for shipping cost we have on items that are 5' x 3' x 3' and weigh thousands of pounds.

It's not as trivial spitting out a flat rate USPS price.

For example you need to know:

residential or business address

if business is it urban or rural delivery

is a lift gate required

is inside deliver required

does customer have a forklift

does customer have a dock

Answers to each one of these questions can be $50 - $250 surcharge on the freight costs on top of how much it costs to transport said item from point A to point B.

Now I am not selling widgets that 100 other ebay'ers are selling within a 25 cent price point, my buyers are businesses who want to  buy and don't want to have to go back and forth over price of shipping BEFORE they buy......

As far as email and phone contacts, like most things ebay does, if there is an easy way to do it, ebay does the opposite. If it was so easy for buyers to email me, why do I constantly get the question What is your email address?

Obviously they have not read the handy guide you shared, of course if that information was easy for a buyer to find, THEY WOULDN'T HAVE TO!!!!

After 2 weeks with fighting over the Freight or local pickup option?   I'm done with using EBAY for  Buying any engine, or transmission.

This freight option is some kind of magic goo that you can not get away from.   The only recourse is to "Contact seller".   And the Customer service staff can do nothing but the same thing.

Then to find out the contact seller option links are broken.   SEE HERE:

It's more than I wanted to deal with this week.

Glad I got some time on my hands.    However, this experience has made me think twice about ordering parts online.   Somethings are just best to be picked up local.

It really leaves me little confidence in ordering Big parts and things from Ebay.

Well said.

Ebay does not make it easy.

I figure that's why so many put up their own storefronts on the web for this very reason.

Selling items that have to be shipped via freight on eBay presents a LOT of challenges and I tend to refrain from listing such items. although I did ship a full size beer keg from Virginia to Ohio once but that went through USPS ground in a 30" x 30" x 36" box.

You may want to take a look at a couple of your items and consider using USPS. I didn't see any current listings, or sold listings, that would fall into the "thousands of pounds" category but assume maybe those are not listed because of the freight shipping issues.  I have sold several items similar to the following and shipped all of them in a USPS flat rate box. If I needed to disassemble into a couple of pieces to fit it into the box I mentioned that in the listing.

The following listing also has a conflict. The listing shows a shipping charge of $25 but the description shows free shipping.

Valid emails/phone numbers are required fields especially for couriers and Intl Shipping. When using the ebay email addies there are no guarantees that they will be seen because of spam filters and/or how often the receiver checks mail. Why I have a backup attached to my eBay mail to advise me if something arises. These points are something eBay refuses to acknowledge. In attempting to call customers personally in the past many numbers are either no longer valid or were generic in nature. That was a perk with PayPal. Mailing Addresses were somewhat confirmed. Now not so much.

I've always added request invoice for combined shipping vs them either being upset or the need to refund. (Remember pre FVF's being refunded on refunds.) For courier/Truck shipping rates can vary substantially on distance, service used and add on extras. Do they require a tailgate or not...Home delivery surcharge...Insurance based on FINAL selling price and distance. Things a seller does not know before hand. One size fits all does not always work for every seller.

As a side note the calculator does not work accurately when a buyer buys 2 unique items. Almost kinda sometimes accurate for similar multiple items but not 100% guaranteed. Combined shipping is not a 2nd box...It's weight/size of additional items plus limitations of a service.

The free shipping is a known recent glitch. Work in progress. From my understanding buyer gets the correct automatic invoice when they buy with applicable shipping options. The problem is the conflict in what they see.

In the past I've had my listings found on kijiji with free shipping except buyer was in Toronto. I'm in Calgary. Approx 2000 miles apart. Proof was screenshot they sent me at the time. Explanation from eBay....We'll look into it..... The 2 recallable situations turned into lost sales. No idea how many other times this has happened for the masses.
