Free returns this fall

So Alan@ebay or Trinton@ebay ....the new free return policy starting this fall states extra protection...what extra protection will ebay offer for sellers ? Thanks!

  1. Extra protection. Starting this fall, when you offer free returns, if the returned item doesn't meet your policy terms—for example it was worn, damaged, or missing tags—you'll have the option to offer less than a full refund.

Offering free returns is a very attractive marketing strategy, especially since most major sellers on other websites use this strategy. Most people want to know they can return something if they simply do not like the item or want it once they get it. This is especiialy important buying online really sight unseen. Pictures may speak a milion words but until the item is tangible it is just a picture. Ebay offering an incentive here by giving the option of a partial refund on these items but, in reality, the process will probably work just like it always has, with a little possible leeway in recouping some funds if you choose a partial. Buyer could still refuse it seems, and want a full refund. Buyer claiming SNAD will probably happen less frequently  with this because many do this because they do not want to pay return shipping on a purchase.  No matter what you do you will still get the ocassional scam buyer with their usual scam agenda.

When I first started there were some of the greatest sellers here on the help boards. One of the first things I learned, write your listing like there is no picture and take pictures as if there is no description.

Just like in a store, if you sell something that is brand new and it gets returned it can legally no longer be sold as a new item.  So claiming SNAD or not claiming SNAD doesnt matter on the items value. Once in the consumers hands its now used. Walmart may be able to take that hit, your average small seller, not so much.

No remorse returns opens the door for a buyer to buy a dozen items and pick and chose which one they really want and have the sellers pay to retrieve all the others.  I can see sellers of collectables having issues with this one, wonder how many items will get switched and sent back to the wrong sellers.

I can think of many catagories where this just isnt going to work well. Clothing, Books, CD's, Video games, Electronics.... I can see the postings now, "buyer claimed they read the book and didnt like it".

Cant wait to see how ebay resolves it when the seller then trys to reduce the refund.  I doubt PayPal will play along with it.

Most online retailers have limits and exclusions for items. Some they will not accept the item back at all once opened. None of them are opened ended.

Power to you if you want to do it.  I dont see the point of it.

AI can not read! Understanding what is read is solely a human function, E$bay folks may read but since AI is the dominant feature at e$Bay, understanding is only available to what is programmed.

"In the email I got from ebay it says I can get as much as a 34% sales boost from offering free returns"

"Yes, Sellers, it is true, and we here at ebay have the statistics to prove it, too!.  AND, just for your convenience, we have the people standing by with their 'mobiles' to get you those views that may turn  into sales!"

And, as the dream - or is it a nightmare - fades and wakefulness approaches, we see ......

Offering free returns may help your sales a bit, but it also opens you up to take a loss when you've done nothing wrong.  On top of that, it opens you up to sabotage.  Any seller can get 3 returns from a wannabe and before you know it, no power seller, account suspended, etc etc...  We won't be offering free returns, EVER.

Besides, if you don't get what you ordered, you get your money back on EBAY.  We haven't returned one item since the beginning of time here at goodballcards 🙂

General reply, not to anybody specifically....Hey if you want to work like a dog for less money, go for this new ebay feature. Then maybe ebay will show your items? Puleeze.

Most ebay sellers are small sellers, not big corporations churning out millions of the same items. Small sellers that would go along with this imho are just telling ebay, go ahead, see what else you can squeeze out of me, I'll work like a dog for less money, whatever you say ebay, just keep finding new ways to work me harder year after year for less money.

I am not dissing small sellers, I am one. But be careful how much you will let ebay squeeze you. It's already rush to the basement pricing, how many small sellers are making minium wage?

Perhaps the question should be, 'How many small sellers WISH they were making minimum wage?'  Smiley Sad

It's true and most small sellers don't even do the math to figure it out and accept the truth. It's also stressful to sell here, problem buyers, breakage by USPS (I'm steaming over this one today) and avoiding all the ways ebay will mess with your account and sales and give you defects, horrible ebay customer service, glitches galore.

I sold a couple grand worth in the last month and I do the math and it's better than minimum wage, but not by a whole lot. So all the sellers not making a couple grand a month need to take a look at how many hours they are spending on ebay related tasks--all of them--and all their expenses-- and compare that to their sales, I think they're in for a rather unhappy surprise.

To offer free return shipping on top of that? It's that frog slowly boiling in the pot, it never realizes just how hot it is getting until it's too late....

Maybe it means that they will start enforcing the regular Seller protection plan that normally gets ignored.

How is that 'extra' protection when it's supposed to be basic protection? I suppose they will ignore that policy even more than they do now if you don't offer free returns?
