Free Ebay Shipping coupon not free at all

As a small store owner I get a $25 coupon for supplies. I tried to use up my coupon for this quarter only to find out that they don't take paypal and there is a tax charge on credit cards that is not covered through the coupon. I wanted to order supplies for 21.99 and even though I had a whole $25 coupon it only covered the $21.99 and the tax I had to charge on my credit card. I refused to purchase. This is not right ebay.

The eBay suppliers seller is a business just like you and I are businesses.  They have decided as a business that opting into the managed payments saves them in payment processing fees.  The managed payments does not accept Paypal as an option yet but they will soon.  This is nothing eBay did or is involved in.

The tax issue you described is because the state where you live require tax be collected for internet purchases and because of that the eBay supplies sellers has to process your tax payment and eBay as the marketplace is require to collect this tax and submit it on behalf of both the buyer and the seller.  This is why eBay has to collect the tax separate from the coupon and needs a credit card to process the tax portion.

eBay does not have an option about the tax collection, nor the fact that the eBay supplies sellers is using managed payments.  The tax part is a federal ruling and the payments is the sellers actions.

I hope that helps you understand better?

I have seen comments like this from others as well.

Something about the forest and the trees comes to mind.

So because you had to spend maybe $1.50 in sales taxes you walked away from $21.99 worth of free goods that apparently you needed. And then what, bought it somewhere else and actually paid the $21.99?

So you would rather spend $21.99 to get what you needed instead of $1.50. That makes absolutely no sense.

Ever use a coupon at a supermarket? The coupon never covers the sales tax.

And you did not have to use your credit card. You could have used your Paypl debit card.

The eBay store subscription page says that store subscribers receive an "eBay-branded shipping supplies coupon".

I do not see anything on that page that suggests the transaction will be "free" or that eBay will  also pay your sales tax for you.

It is a coupon, not a gift card.
