Posting from mobile phone, please forgive any spelling errors. Long story short, a medical emergency necessitated my transporting a family member 2.5 hours away to a hospital and an overnight stay for a testing procedure has now evolved into a two-day stay.
For the first time ever, I will be mailing a package a day late. I've contacted the buyer and informed them of the situation and apologized for the inconvenience. Will I be placed on the "bad-boy" list and my other items reduced in visibility? What else can I expect?

How many packages? Generally only your late shipping rate is effected unless you have a high amount (I think about 5%). You other option is to expedite the servcie to make up for the lost time.
I would not worry about as it sounds like you normally ship very quickly. You can also satify the buyer before they leave feedback by sending them a messagae through the eBay message system and let them know you are refunding the shipping portion because of the delay in shipping. That should show them you care and want them happy.
Good Luck Selling!
