Why does Ebay allow negative feedback without the buyer contacting the seller and giving the seller an opportunity to rectify any problem? Ebay keeps track of all contact with buyers so they could easily see if the buyer made contact with the seller. Seems very unfair to me that a buyer can leave negative without contacting the seller first.

So you would be ok with a buyer contacting the seller & then leaving a negative feedback?
You have great feedback & no buyer will notice that one neg.
Some who dig deeper will however notice the false positive feedback you left which is a selling violation & the buyer can have it removed if they call eBay.

Instead of violating the feedback policy by leaving the buyer neg comments, did you contact the buyer first to try and resolve the issue, in the hopes of a feedback revision ?

You have to take into consideration that there are many members who do not know what to do if a transaction doesn't go right for whatever reason.
I would suggest contacting the buyer who was dissatisfied and asking why they were dissatisfied. Never leave negative comments on a positive buy feedback. You are better off leaving no feedback for that person, and if you can work something out with them you can send a feedback revision request. And if you they won't change it, or if doesn't violate a policy to get it removed, you can reply to the negative. That would be more effective than leaving that buyer a false positive (which is a violation on your part).
