When purchasing a label for a buyer on eBay, and you see the grayed-out features for Fedex such as home Delivery. I shipped Fedex and at was quoted as $21.35. It billed out at a cost of $52.18.
That is the correct amount for what someone at Fedex charged in addition for an address change and that amounted to an additional of $19.50 (that is the starting cost that tops at some $200.00). They then added a home delivery fee of $10.00. I had talked to eBay, and they tried to appeal the fees. I was told that it was turned down.
I contacted Fedex directly to find out what happened and why and how can this be prevented. The person couldn't explain it either. They did issue a credit for the $29.50 being this change was done at a ground facility and not by me. The person was going to try to find out how and why the address change was done. since I was never notified. After hours with both eBay and Fedex, all I can say is stay away from Fedex specially if you see anything is grayed out as shipping options. The risk is not worth the gamble. I do not know if I will ship Fedex again.
I have been trying to find out why eBay is not requiring buyers to verify their address like Paypal used to do based on the address on the credit card. That would help protect the Buyer, seller, and eBay.
Any input would be helpful. With Ebay pushing for one (1) day shipping, I can see this happening to others also. There doesn't seem to be any address verification. I do request on my listed items I am selling for the buyer to check the address they have on file with Ebay. Thank you.

Thank you for putting this out there. I guess that is part of the reason we aren't charged until after delivery. I will definitely be more cautious.

It also happened to once. I was charged a hefty “special handling” surcharge despite routine packaging of a light weight jacket. EBay appeal was rejected and FedEx was not able to provide me any additional details or explanation.
I started to use UPS more after that incident but they are definitely more costly. In the long run FedEx has saved me money and since this happened only once I have accepted it as a relatively rare occurrence.

Both FedEx and UPS likes to add other charges, that's why you are not charged for it until after the package has been delivered.
