FEAR I'm being scammed as a first time seller

Hi! I'm trying to sell a high ticket ring (wedding ring) for the first time. I listed it last night, marked it up 30% for the BIN price. This morning, I receive an email saying the item has sold for the BIN price of $9,100.00. The buyer has good reviews but it seems that most of the items he has purchased could be cheap items. Anyway, the buyer is asking for an invoice and says he will transfer the money via PayPal as soon as he gets the invoice. I know I need to request signature confirmation and delivery confirmation. Any advice?!

Um, no... eBay has already removed the listing. The OP has no obligation to do anything further at all.

(Even if this was a legitimate buyer, which it isn't, the invoice could be generated by the seller through eBay; there is no need to reveal their email address by sending the invoice from PayPal.)

I would tell any seller that require this for me where to go and what to do when they got there.

Because sellers are adults and are allowed to sell here as long as the items are legal, dont violate policies etc etc.

And if ebay restricted based on this imagine the drama that would ensue...people cannot even handle the decisions ebay makes now and complain about how sellers should be left alone to sell....and how they are adults etc...and now they want ebay to restrict who can sell what...imagine that

Make sure you read about seller protection and follow it to the letter.
Also itis a great idea if you have the ring appraised really fast to have the documentation that it was listed correctly and it is what it is.

And for those that do not know....the buyer is paying PayPal because that is who collects the money for us and for most ebay sales. And most hig end buyers will request an invoice and always have for their records. Nothing new in and of itself

I don't have words to describe how incredibly bad this advice is. Have you spent all of this time on the forums without learning anything about how sellers are scammed with the "send me an invoice" request? Unbelievable.

1) Sellers don't have to send an invoice; buyers can pay right from the listing

2) Sending an invoice through PayPal invites a fake "you've been paid" email

3) "High end" buyers have their PayPal transaction and eBay listing as proof of what they purchased; they don't need an invoice

4) As was already posted, the listing is gone, because the buyer was a scammer.

Again: it's unbelievable that someone would advise the OP to send an invoice. And to tell them they have no choice ...

completely wrong on all accounts and if you would actually bothered to read the thread before posting you would know that the listing was pulled due to a hacked by her account.

@everything-from-trinkets-to-treasures

With all due respect, OP was advised repeatedly that this was a scam, and has already been advised by Ebay that this was a fraudulent user.   This may be verified in message/post # 16.  Sorry but you are advising the OP to go against Ebay's ruling, and that would hurt the OP.

Thank you for your input! I never responded and then received an email from eBay saying the listing was removed because of "unauthorized user of buyer or bidder account".

I responded to the first post.....so there was nothing said about ebay doing anything in that original post so no one advised to go against what ebay said nor can you find me saying to "go against ebay"... so do not put words in my mouth......but thank you anyway ...Glad to hear OP got it resolved.

I agree that sellers are adults but it is no different than selling limits.  For new sellers, they are 10 listings and $500.00, whichever comes first, usually.  It is not a matter of them not being adults; it is a matter of protecting them until they become more experienced with selling and how the site works.  New sellers are vulnerable because of their lack of knowledge.  That is all that is being acknowledged here.  In this case, the OP could have basically given away his ring, since Ebay has already verified the buyer was fraudulent~that is indisputable.  Most here don't want to see the OP lose $9,100.00.

Well if eBay would educate buyers on the dangers of this kind of scam then maybe I would agree with you.

Also if eBay would protect buyers that got scammed with the same scam I would agree with you but eBay throw sellers under the bus.

the fact is any seller that wants to try selling on eBay shouldn't be jumping in and selling it high dollar High fraud item right off the bat. EBay should apply account limits more evenly so that sellers cannot jump in and list a $10, 000 item.

I have one account that when I signed up I got $100, 000 selling limit right off the bat. My second selling account I had $500 and a limit of 10 items for month.

The way they handle it is absolutely ridiculous. Honestly I believe that new seller should have a limit of about $500 and 10 items per month. Until they've learned the ropes.

Had the old P not come here for advice and had the listing not been pulled due to unauthorized use she very well could have been scammed out of a $9, 000 ring.

Now you say that we're all adults here, but how is it right that a new seller can get scammed out of a expensive item without any warnings from eBay?

Restrictions absolutely should be imposed on new sellers. Honestly I think selling account you have to have a buying history before they are allowed to sell.

This would give them an idea of the buying into things and how they wish to deal with their customers when they start selling.

The restriction is not to protect sellers, never has been...it is so ebay can gage if they are going to follow policies, complete transactions etc ...it is to protect buyers. It is the time period where new sellers prove themselves.

Not ebay's job to do more than to give people the information......people have to take the initiative and read it/learn it. This is not a new concept and why there is such a statement in the user agreement about having read and agree to.......before using the site...that we all get and agree to. Ebay cannot stop people from ignoring it and agreeing to something they haven't bothered to read or learn.
Again...adulting
Countless pages of policies, webinars, podcasts etc etc....all for the learning

With all due respect, you told them they had no choice but to invoice, but the buyer can pay through Ebay through the PAY NOW button on the listing; they don't need an invoice which can be the precursor of a fraudulent Paypal payment notice being sent~and all that was in the OP.

Ebay told the OP the transaction was fraudulent, so your posting that was telling them to go against Ebay's ruling~you just didn't know that at the time because you hadn't read the whole thread.

It's understood that it is for buyers.  But it also protects sellers, so they don't get in over their heads.

I have often posted to new sellers that they must prove themselves and build up a history of successfully completed transactions.

Thank you but I am well aware.

I respectfully disagree with you on this. As I said my very first selling account had $100, 000 limit the the account that I opened a few months later had a much much lower.

when I called and asked eBay to raise the limit they stated that this was to protect sellers from getting themselvesthemselves in over their heads.

Ummm....customer service is something we provide. When a buyer asks for an invoice we give it that is why ebay gives us a tool/link for that...no one said they couldn't pay without it.
Buyer said they would pay as soon as they get it. ....NOT that they couldn't pay without it.

Teaching OP poor customer service is also not good...and goes against whay ebay says about customer service too
