I've noticed lately that Priority shipping to California is always more than double the price I pay to ship to other states. I couldn't figure out a way to exclude California (if anyone knows how to block buyers from only one state, I'd love to know, but I suspect that isn't possible). Right now on my listings that are heavy and require Priority I have the max shipping price for other states listed and a notation front and center that "Shipping charges WILL differ for California buyers."
I know that won't work well, but I'm not sure what else to do. I can't ridiculously overcharge the rest of the country's buyers for shipping ($17 to CA and $6-$9 everywhere else!) and I shouldn't be expected to take that much of a loss just because someone from CA buys the item. What are other sellers doing in this situation? I'm assuming there was a recent change since shipping to CA used to be in the $9 and then boom...a week or so ago it shot into the stratosphere...

@cgillingwater You cannot exclude sales to California unless you are selling an item that is banned by that state. If you put text in your listing that CA residents need to pay higher shipping it cannot be enforced and is against policy as you can't charge a buyer more than what's stated in the shipping field.
You need to use the "calculated" shipping option. Enter package type, dimensions and weight, then the buyer will see the price based on their zone.

^^^ Yes to what copper posted above, how are you doing shipping ?^^^
I see a black purse & wallet showing $3.74 to a CA zip and same to me in NJ zip
You need to get correct shipping packages, put items in package with packing material & weigh them.
set shipping up shipping to calculate from your zip code to buyers zip code.

@cgillingwater I use Calculated shipping and on most packages over 1 lbs and offer both Parcel Select and Priority. Was using FedEx but suspect they are overcharging for everything, lots have noticed and numerous threads have been created about it. Anyway, if the item is expensive I might eat the cost of Priority over Parcel Post but most west coast buyers seem to accept high shipping cost from the East Coast ... I wish they would complain directly to USPS to help all of us ... us and them in the end.

If this were possible I would have blocked Florida already. ![]()

If the parcel is less than a pound, or even two pounds, there is NO WAY shipping to CA is $17.

I never said that was the reason I would be blocking Florida, my point was if blocking certain states was possible I would be blocking Florida.

Parcel Select and online Priority cost the same. Well, in some cases Priority is literally 5 cents more. There are no significant price differences until you get above 18 pounds or over 1 cubic foot, and even there it's only for Zones 5 - 8. You see a higher price for Priority in the listing because the default is to show the retail price.
See pages 13 and 24 of Notice 123:

Minor quibble here.
It's not a "California" rate.
It is Zone 8 rate, which (for you) would probably also include WA and OR.
For folks on the other coast, zone 8 would be NY, NJ, etc. Maybe ... depending on the zip ...
For me in Far NW Florida, SoCal (San Diego up to LaLa Land) is Zone 7, while NoCal, WA and OR are zone 8
Each Seller's ship from zip code (1st 3 digit base) is the center of a bullseye, with rings radiating out in certain increments that define Postal Zones.

They haven't seen it before because it isn't true.
USPS postage is based on 8 Zones. The original poster is in Georgia, so USPS wil charge him the Zone 8 postage not only for California but also for other western states. You can see in the rates tables posted above that indeed the postage cost for a 4-pound package would be $17 to ship to California, and under $7 to ship to a buyer who lived very near to the seller. But there are plenty of locations and prices in-between. That's why most sellers set up their listings using calculated shipping.

Also, for the OP's location, it includes locations in Nevada, Montana and Idaho.

Not about shipping cost,
but yes ebay should let us block states.
The guy who sold plants could not ship to some states, so he had to cancel orders.
He is gone now,
same with the gun grip guy.
Every state has different laws.
If I know my item can't be sold in your state,
I should be able to block that state.
