The time away setting is supposed to adjust your handling time, so you don't have to change it like you did with the old vacation option.

With TIME AWAY you have 2 options (you can allow customers to make purchases or BLOCK customer from making purchases during your vacation).
During TIME AWAY all customers can still VIEW your items (customer will see message with date of your return.
TIME AWAY has nothing to due to "handling time". I usually just BLOCK customer from making purchases during my vacation time.

I forgot something...if you plan on letting customers made purchases during your TIME AWAY. You WILL need to change your handling time or you will defect for late shipments.

With the time away option, we don't have to change our handling time like we did with the vacation setting.
If you continue to sell, time away will adjust the handling time for you.

The operative words are "the time away setting is SUPPOSED to adjust your handling time". I have 450 items on Buy now - apparently the handling time was adjusted on all but 2 of them - since I got dinged for not shipping within the one day shipping I normally offer. It's kind of hard to ship if you can't get out of your driveway since you have 30 inches of snow and the streets have not been plowed - hence the Time Away!
