Embarrassed by the sellers price gouging on eBay

Not looking for advice or an answer to a question. Just sounding off!

Its interesting that I am  hearing a lot of comments from family members and friends who know I sell on eBay. Comments center around the price some sellers have listed sanitizing items for, asking me if I am doing the same thing. Most comments are benign some are more negative. I guess you find out the true nature of some folk.

I am not naive, been on this earth for 64 years A career in the Armed Forces, one in Law enforcement (Before I get comments about being a war monger or dirty cop, I like to believe I was one of the "good" guys) and 5 years of providing direct support for Adults with Developmental Disabilities has shown me the many facets of human nature. Of course I know there will always be people that take gross advantage of human misfortune.

But every time I see the type of person that tries to sell a bottle of hand sanitizer for $100 it still irks me.

I would venture to say that most of the sellers that use these forums are not in that group of lower life forms and I appreciate that.

So I have vented, thank you for reading and am interested in any other views.

Have a great day and good luck selling!

Embarrassed by the sellers price gouging on eBay

A few days ago eBay banned the sale of several items that were being price-gouged (masks, sanitizer etc.).  Listings still pop up, but eBay has gotten very good at whack-a-mole.  A search that  brought up over 30,000 listings on the day of the announcement now brings up less than 100.

Interesting, logged out and did a search for 'hand sanitizer'.  Got 1,043 Best Match, 1049 New Listing.  For N95, got 4351, including ones from China.  What was really funny (not hahaha) was the seller with multiple listings for a 1 ounce Silver Dollar for $130+, which included 10 N95 masks.

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

Hi - I agree with you. Yesterday, I saw a 2 oz bottle of hand sanitizer listed (as a new listing) here on eBay for .....wait for it.....audacity drum roll....$5,000.  It was quickly pulled.  Another ad - that was pulled was for a small bottle of sanitizer for $1,000 with 230 plus views -also pulled. People were purchasing small bottles of sanitizer for $100 plus yesterday, I don't know if eBay shut down the completed sale or not.

I am glad that eBay is doing all they can to stop this and as always it is the actions of a few that create misery for many. There are people in Assisted Living, Board and Care,  Hospitals, Skilled Nursing, Day Care etc and etc where these supplies are necessary, make sense to use and are now difficult to locate at fair prices.

This panic and hoarding just makes me feel rather sad. But the greedy price hikes make me disgusted.

What is amazing to me is that people willingly pay that, considering that for around $10 or less most people can easily make their own gallons of the stuff, and it's much better for you than the toxic chemical commercial brew.

On ebay, it's a numbers game; even though a listings search showed much less,

600 hand sanitizers listings sold just today 3/10 and the day isn't over, (I don't know if ebay stops the post sale)
thousands more sold in last few days after the ban

My first thought was to send a message to one of the sellers reminding them of eBay's policy etc.... now that would have been naive. Maybe when this is over, these sellers will be stuck with their stockpile of products.

My sister and her husband are going to Greece at the end of the month and cant find any sanitizing wipes so I sent her a box I use when I am preparing items for listing.  $0, free shipping!

Have a great day!

A box of wipes aren't going to solve your sister's potential problems.  Why can't people stay home?

I know this doesn't help much, but this seriously is nothing new and I would be amazed if a lot of opportunists WEREN'T trying it on.  Ebay and similar sites have just given these people another place to try to make a few shekels out of misfortune.  I rank it on par with the type of thieves who cover the obits in the newspapers, find out when various funerals are being held and then rob the homes of the bereaved while they're at the service.

You served in the military and law enforcement, and work with disabled adults ... and your family and friends still question whether you are price-gouging on masks and sanitizer?

I would be more embarrassed by my family and friends than I would about eBay sellers I don't even know.

ebay still asks that all these offending listings get reported.  If you have 10 minutes to kill just go down the list and report each one you can in that 10 minutes. If we all did that you'd think the tables would begin to shift.  I don't mind giving up some of my minutes, these creeps are affecting every seller on ebay.

So, if you look to see how many are still up then take the opportunity to try and shut a few down. The ebay blues still insist this works. 🤔

Most people who plan these types of trips pay for them months in advance including scheduling time off work. Canceling at this late date you lose the money unless you have a personal emergency issue with documentation.  It's not that simple to accomplish and not be out of pocket.

Unfortunately, no one could pay me enough to fly anywhere or take a cruise today because of the same shared recycled air supply.

Also, unfortunately, Greece is just beginning to explode with cases.

On March 4th, there were 8 confirmed cases in Greece (how many not reported?); March 5, 31 cases; March 10, 89 cases...at this exponential growth, there will be hundreds if not thousands of cases by April, just as seen in neighboring Italy.

Italy had 20 confirmed cases on February 21,

18 days later March 10
there are 10,149 confirmed cases in Italy!

The headlines in Greece are already alarming;

Greece on High Alert

Greece Shuts Down All Schools, Universities as Cases Jump to 89

Public barred from 2020 Olympic flame lighting in Greece

Coronavirus: Greece Closes Schools, Theaters, Cinemas in Achaea, Zante and Elis

The Greek Government has banned all large events and conferences for 4 weeks until 5 April.

I feel sorry for those whose plans were probably made long ago on travelling to Greece or anywhere overseas these days.

I have been watching this mapping device, it rose over 2000 confirmed cases this morning.

Getting sick or carrying the virus to anyone else is not worth any money loss on a trip.  I agree people should try and stay home until this passes.  All those great destinations will be there later.  Hopefully we all stay healthy and can replan our trips!!
