I have been an eBay member since 1999. Please read this gets good.
I recently purchased power versions of gillette proglides and was shipped nonpower versions.
After dealing with threats of internet crimes from the trusted eBay seller, I was allowed to return the items. Once the items were returned the trusted eBay seller said I was only due 1/2 return because the product was opened. I explained that I was forced to open because the seller claimed that gillette changed packaging and what I have was in fact power versions. Very long story short, I got my refund the trusted eBay seller is a scammer and it still scamming.
I decide to sell some broken iphone 7's for cash. All or sold as "for parts not working". All go well, actually selling instantly. One of my sales, the buyer sends me a partial return request. Requesting a 65.00 return from a 80.00 sale to have the phone repaired. I instantly respond reminding them the phone was sold for parts or not working but if they want to return, then send the item back and as per ebay policy, I have no choice but to issue a refund.
I hear nothing back. No response to 3 messages. Last night 78.00 was deducted from my bank account and today I received a empty envelope. I contacted support who said they would escalate the case that it was something they could not handle. Kicker here? The account that made this return was created 4 months ago. Why was the refund given before I had the opportunity to inspect my item upon return?

No need for conspiracy theories.
We've never gotten an empty-box return. But most others seem to advise filing a police report and, if shipped USPS, to file a report with the post office. Then use these filings to help prove your case.
We haven't had to try this but when trying to get ebay to reverse a situation like this you have to prove that the buyer violated their policy. A "he said/she said" argument won't work. When in doubt they side with the buyer.

Why was the refund given before I had the opportunity to inspect my item upon return?
Basically, if you do not qualify for the "withhold up to 50% for a faulty return" program, it really doesn't matter to ebay what you got back. You have to refund anyway be it your product or an empty box. I suppose its eBay's way of saving you some time.?
Did the buyer use the return label you sent for the return? If not was the "return address" that of the buyer?

I have the envelope i have not opened it. The buyer requested a partial return for me to pay for the repair for the item. Red flag because it was sold as for parts or not working. I immediately contacted eBay. I was told by a rep that I would be able to receive the item, inspect it and then issue a return. ergo, conspiracy theory.
