Last few days at random, Some bid winners are receiving the message "Pay now to avoid cancellation
Pay by Apr xx so you don't lose this item" Some are only a couple days old and getting the message. Did something change in the spring update I missed ? I checked the communications with buyers and the payment reminder is set to "No"
Any help appreciated

To clarify "a couple days old".... meaning they won an auction on Tuesday and still didn't pay by Thursday so on Thursday, they get a message that says 'pay'?

Correct, 2-7 days old so far is the range

It is a eBay pay reminder
no big deal
it goes away when you pay for the item

We do not use payment reminders, just started this past week at random. Have older winners that have received no messages (2-weeks plus)
Just thought it odd

I believe eBay does this automatically
you do not have to set it up
I think it is just eBay's attempt to further encourage buyers to pay sellers

I don't like these messages either. I'm sure a lot of buyers think they're coming from sellers - not ebay. We don't need buyers angry even before they've paid. We can handle our own reminders just fine.

It seems eBay has changed the way unpaid items are handled. I’m not sure if there is a way to set the process to a longer duration.
Note the new wording in the Buyer Requirements tab.

Here is another thread on the subject.
Seems it is a new eBay "update" on how things will be done.
eBay trying to smooth things out, but as usual making it a bumpy road.

Yes - no more having to open UPI cases.
Buyers are already complaining about it on the Buying Board.
You can read how it works here.

As they should be. This is bad. A good percentage of buyers wait more than 5 days to pay. We're lucky that we don't need fast payment. But we need angry buyers even less.

Yes, you evidently missed the Announcement in the recent Seller Update. Sellers no longer file unpaid item cases against buyers. Buyers are given these notices and sellers have a choice: they can automate their response....after five days of no pay, ebay will auto cancel the transaction. This provides a somewhat shorter time span than the old policy. However, the auto cancel is a seller choice, you can also choose to cancel manually.....in which case you have up to 30 days in which to cancel.
So, it's up to you. If you want to continue to work with these buyers and extend the time in which to pay, just let them know you'll give them till (whenever) and that will be fine. If you want the five day rule to work automatically, set it for that.
If you want to give your buyers more time, make sure you have your preference set to "manual".
One thing to keep in mind.....it is very possible that by the end of the year, ebay will be adding some form of "immediate payment" to auction listings. (I'm guessing this will be a seller option, not a requirement, but I don't know.) Either way, buyers who have become used to the idea of waiting to pay may need to start thinking in terms of paying sooner.

I should add, I believe this applies to any transaction made without Immediate Payment, not just auctions. Many sellers use IP for fixed price listings, but not everyone does, so this can happen with FP or auction. Also, currently IP can't be added to "Make Offers", so this also applies to situations where a buyer has accepted an offer (or a seller has accepted the buyer's offer) but hasn't paid.

or eBay just wants their funds sooner so they can delay paying sellers

I am pretty laid back when it comes to payments and will send a "are you still interested in this item" message after 4 days or so, nonetheless, I love being paid the same day or the next day after a coin auction ends.
My favorite post about this is

When I buy something, I always pay immediately; It's not like I have a hundred purchases and take my time getting around to it.
To me, it is a responsibility. Why make a seller wait?
