Ebay changing the return policy of a listing without my permission

I contacted Ebay regarding requirments and exceptions for the Top Rated Plus Spring Seller Update. They were trying to find out why a listing would not qualify for top rated plus. I was told that they needed more time to look at it and would call me back in 10 minutes. While I was waiting for the call back, Ebay went into my listing and changed the return period from 14 days to 30 days without my knowledge or consent. When they called back they admitted to changing the return period on this listing while I was waiting for the call back. They then said they would go and change the refund period back to 14 days. However, I already changed it back myself at this point. What if it had sold when they changed it to 30 days without my permission? Are they allowed to change the length of the return time frame without seller premission or knowledge? I recorded the phone calls for my records and you can hear the representative admit to changing the return period.

Sounds like someone jumped the gun and thought they were doing you a favor by changing the listings so that you would now qualify for the Top rated status.

Yes it was to due with the category I posted was supposed to have some exemptions. I had already informed them that when I change it to the 30 day return period the top rated plus seal would show. I already tested it. They went in and see if it worked for 30 day returns even though I already told them it does.

No they don't normally change things like that but perhaps they changed it to see if that would give you the top rated seller plus logo on the listing since a minimum of 30 day return is generally required for that status.  I think that some categories do have different rules, I'm not sure if that applies to you or not.

Do you meet the requirements to be a top rated seller? Its possible that you don't have enough sales yet.

Edit...I guess we cross posted, I didn't see your reply until I had already posted.

I am confused.  It sounds like you both knew the reason it didn't qualify is your 14 day return policy?

Regardless, it also sounds like they were confirming that when you checked it again and changed it back.  It does not seem unreasonable to me that they would need to do that to answer your question.  Perhaps (and I'm just making this up) they could also take the listing off while the testing was being done.

What if it had sold when they changed it to 30 days without my permission?

If that happened and a buyer initated a return between day 15 and 30, I'd presume the buyer would be allowed the return, and again "perhaps" you could complain enough that eBay would give you a one-time credit for the amount of the refund.

Yes they checked to see if changing the return policy to 30 days would qualify for top rated plus. However, I already told them previously that it does qualify if I change it to 30 days. I am not sure if they didn't trust me or what but they had to see for themselves while I was waiting for the call back. They didn't tell me that they were going to change the return period until they already did and called me back. The listing was active the whole time and it's a mutiple quanity listing as well. If someone were to buy from my listing during the time in which they changed the return policy to 30 days, that person would then expect that they have 30 days to return said item. Even though I didn't authorize that return policy.

I didn't know the reason because it was in the exempt virtual curreny category.

I think you're the only person I've ever heard of actually getting a call back when they said they would!

LOL yes they are bad about calling back. I always make a point to tell them they are being recorded and I think that motivates them more.

Lucky.  A lot of people say eBay just hangs up when told the call is recorded.

I don't know how accurate eBay's update Timeline is, but it looks like the Virtual Currency exclusion is slated for June 1.
