Ebay authenticators falsely rejected my authentic item

I walked into a Gucci store at a major mall in North Dallas , I have the receipt and the credit card transaction. I could even get both Gucci and my credit card company to send certified copies of these documents to ebay. but for some mysterious reason, the authenticators rejected it. These are not super popular shoes, they are the Gucci Basket model, so I can't imagine that people at these companies have a ton of experience verifying these. The official reason for rejection: Could not authenticate. What the hell does that mean? it sounds like they are incompetent and literally did not have the skills to authenticate this product so they rejected it just to be safe. It's either that or they're just flipping a coin instead of actually authenticating cuz my shoe is 100% authentic, I wouldn't not be so angry and make a post about it if I had any doubt about them being authentic. I would just be like "oh well I tried". but no I'm furious, and I'm sure the buyer is furious too cuz He was getting these shoes for half price. This has been happening to other people as well, so I just want my voice to be heard as well and hopefully ebay will start auditing their authenticators

It may very well be happening to others, certainly we see such claims on this board, but Ebay is a large corporation and you are just a person and so your voice will not be heard within Ebay's internal conversations.  Ironic since the claim that corporations are people is a false claim based upon the opinion of a US Supreme Court clerk who was a failed railway executive who got the job as a consolation prize.

Perhaps someone finally needs to authenticate the authenticators. Very sloppy program.

Similar thing happened to me yesterday. I sold an authentic uncommon Louis Vuitton bag. I actually worked for Louis Vuitton so I kinda know what’s what.  eBay denied my sale as “was not as described “ Then they listed a very very long list of mostly incorrect things that were wrong with the bag including stained handles. I wouldn’t even know how to stain Louis Vuitton chocolate brown treated leather (not the vachetta)

SoI legitimately described and  photographed the vintage flaws and the “authenticator” declined the sale. This is a hard bag to sell because it is so different bthe buyer got a great price and I was so excited to make the sale. Now it’s been blocked. Ugh

I'm sure it can be frustrating...  I'd sent copy of the receipt and authentication provided by Gucci since that was available apparently along w/ it for authentication.

Folks need understand the pressures third party venues are facing when it comes to many a brand name.  When the FTC comes along and says the in the USA Internet consumer fraud complaints amounted to 8.8 Billion dollars last year pressure rises.  The FBI made claim not long back more like 10 Billion in complaints received.  eBay did not create these authentication venues for sake of "Gee, seem's like a good idea!"

There are pressures coming from a variety of angles and for numerous reasons.  It's no secret many a manufacturer and authorized reseller of varied goods have for years put pressure on Amazon, eBay etc.  VERO exists due to pressures, Trust & Safety exist due to pressures, those pressure's are caused by sellers selling counterfeits etc.  Now after big retail brick & mortar were caught with their pants down in the Pandemic whereby before treating eCommerce as a side venue that's changed in BIG fashion.

If one were to ask the Board of Directors of Gucci, Vuitton, Coach and heaps of other products if they'd like see eBay or Amazon third party sales thrive or die I can assure you they'd say die.  You can call it corporate greed, you can say that these entities field calls, complaints about counterfeit, quality of product on and on bought via third parties and they do.

The landscape of third party eCommerce is more complex than me, you or them and it continues to heat up just like Social Media speak of regulatory measures and online video gaming is heating up.  Its extremely unfortunate that folks who use any or all of these varied services properly are made to suffer due to others activities and actions but that is the case.  With eCommerce the more the problems arise and get reported the more likely it will be that regulatory measures go into place as matter of law up to and possibly including doing away with and/or modifying First Sale Doctrine legislation.

Understand there is little advocacy in DC, States or even nations to represent the interests of third party sellers yet there are absolute HORDES of entities and money representing brands.  For twenty plus years eBay has done just an outstanding job of dodging bullets as a venue whereby common folks can sell things and make some money, far better than Amazon has done.  But the landscape of manufacturers, authorized resellers, distributors etc has not stayed stable nor stagnant and companies like eBay have to be reactionary, they are not the "Big kids on the block" they are the target of countless entities wanting see regulatory measures put in place.

It's important that sellers keep that in mind even when wronged be that via authenticators or customer service.  Once upon a time these venues were all over the place, B2C, C2C sales venues including third parties and systematically put asunder for varied reasons.  No...  I'm not waving a "Fanboy Flag" albeit I do appreciate eBay allowing me sell stuff but the facts are facts and this company as well as others are trying to be proactive in a world that's now forcing them, social media, online gaming to be reactionary.

Not too many years back I was astonished for example to see the CEO of Microsoft XBox Line, CEO of Sony, of Nintendo to publicly say, "Our venues are not that of freedom of speech."  They did that as nations mainly in Western Europe were seeking to regulate them in BIG fashion.

If any dont care believe me look at the legislation that fortunately did not pass called "The Safe Shopping Act."

That legislation sought to make the VENUES responsible for any trademark infringements, a TERM can be trademarked like "Onesies" or "Ford" or "Gucci."   Numerous places reported on it including commerce based law firms who stated "Its the end of third party commerce."

We are about to be entering the 2024 year and this is still a problem. You would think that $1 billion global corporation like a eBay would do their due diligence and have expert authenticators. I can sympathize with you all because the same thing happened to me today.

I am beside myself, see a reason for not approving, my authenticity was that the Gucci bag did not “appear” authentic. Ok…. Well, first of all, this hurt sellers on so many different levels. Even more importantly, that losing the sale, it hurts our credibility and our professional business image. That is about the lowest blow you can get as a seller.

on top of losing the sale, this mistake cost me my credibility and professional image, and let me out financially. It cost me $14 just for the bubble wrap, another $2.50 for a heavy duty box, my shipping supplies (tape, tissue paper, my business logo stickers) and I purchased additional protection offered by eBay (insurance and signature upon receipt) for $20. It cost me over $40 for their error.

What really bothers me the most is that they did not even attempt to contact me to give me a chance to provide evidence and defend my position- it was automatically rejected. I have over 30 photos of the bag (including the serial number inside). So I agree with the original poster in the community that the authentication team is clearly incompetent. I had that bag wrapped so well in bubble wrap I doubt they even opened it, and I will be able to tell when they return it. If you’re an EXPERT IN LUXURY HANDBAGS, YOU WOULD KNOW THAT LUXURY BRANDS HIDE THE SERIAL NUMBERS!!! If they had given me a chance to show where the serial number was on the bag, THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CROSS REFERENCE ALL OVER THE INTERNET THAT IT IS FACT A LEGITIMATE GUCCI BAG!!!

This error hurt me and my business on so many levels, and I am BESIDE MYSELF that other sellers have been faced with this issue- The original comment is from 2022 and 2 years later THE PROBLEM IS ONGOING!!

EBay stated they are paying for the return but knew nothing about the additional protection I purchased, which is unprofessional. But moving forward, I am going to be printing my photos of the bag along with the serial number inside of the bag all 30 pictures and I’m going to ship it to eBay corporate. I am going to start a community thread that sellers can come together and anyone who has experienced this issue will have the opportunity to have their voice heard at the macro level. There are some SERIOUS CHANGES THAT NEED TO BE MADE WITH eBAY PROCEDURES, and this issue CANNOT CONTINUE. Sellers have the RIGHT TO DEFEND THEIR POSITION AND SUBMIT EVIDENCE, and the fact that we cannot do that is unacceptable.

There should be a contact in the eBay authentication department, which I even question who does the authenticating at this point- Are they experts? I’m not an expert per se, but have been reselling 15+ years and have enough knowledge to differentiate between a knock off and an original and I know very well to search all throughout the bag for serial numbers. That is the first thing that I do when I make a purchase is cross reference the number on that item. I was so reassured, knowing that eBay had this department to protect me as a seller, and to also protect my customer, but was beside myself when I found out that they said it did not “look” authentic….and didn’t give me a chance to submit the serial number on the bag.

Ooops, that’s too bad!! We determined your bag doesn’t look real without performing due-diligence and now you’re labeled as a “fraudulent” seller. Not a happy seller at all right now. I won’t stop until this matter is heard at the highest level and eBay reviews my evidence and apologizes for the error and remove this derogatory mark against my account….and give all the other sellers who have experienced similar issues the chance to  have their case reviewed as well.

Not right AT ALL. I can resolve this bag for a lot more money, it’s the principal point that how did not pass authentication when it has a serial number on the inside, and no one even contacted me to question the validity, it was just automatically declined without due diligence and I LOST MONEY
