My husband bought two of these at a sale.  There are NO markings of any kind on them.   The canister part is 24 in long x 4 in diameter.  It has a solid divider in the center of the canister so it is divided into two parts.  One end opens, the other end is solid with 3 holes and you get into that half with a side opening with a spring-loaded door.   There is a tubular thing on the outside that is open on one end.    We've showed it to several people and no one has ever seen one before.

it sort of looks like a hot welding rod holder

welding rods are kept in ovens sometimes and they are too hot to handle so you would need a can to take them with you to the job

That's what I would have thought, a land surveyor's blueprint tube or the like. But that should be waterproof (has end holes) or what's the point? Also, no reason for the side 'door'.

Thanks for the responses.   That was a big help.   I'm going to do more checking about the land surveyor's thing as I remember also seeing a couple of land survey tools at that sale.  At least it gives me a start.

Pardon my curiosity but if you didn't know what it was why did you buy it?

and/or

Didn't the person you bought it from know what it was?

LOL....A  quick look on Google Lens of your second photo suggests it is part of a  disposable rocket launcher, anti tank weapon.

Some of my best profitable items are stuff I don't know what it is when I first get them. If it is cheap, I am willing to gamble and learn later what it is before it is too late especially buying storage units I get plenty of stuff that makes me go hmm but if it has enough hmmm in that unit, I gaurantee you I  will be bidding, I can always research later.

I sure wish someone would figure out what this is so I can quit trying. I have spent hours today picking through pages of Google images. OCD can really kill a day.
