Do I have to accept paypal? Can I ask for other forms of payment from items I'm selling? Here is my BIG problem. I'm not in the selling business. On rare occasions I sell items on Ebay after other sale sites don't work. I sell on Ebay ONLY when I can't sell elsewhere. The items I do sell are all my personal items. I've never seen this before but, the last item I sold paypal put a 21 day hold on the funds. After some research I discovered the hold will be lifted 3 days AFTER confirmed delivery. This is NOT acceptable to me. I tried contacting Ebay to ask this but, their stupid system will only let me ask questions that fall in their narrow category of questions. So my question is when selling can I ask for other forms of payment other than paypal and can I refuse to accept paypal?

Your choices are Paypal or a merchant account.

You have no choice.

Thanks. I read it and the statement that says "Credit card or debit card processed through the seller's Internet merchant account". Would square work for this if I had an account with them?

Does square have an official gateway? How can taking square be any cheaper than Paypal?

@sir-cobra Not using PayPal may cause you more issue then if you use them, lots of Buyers USE PayPal and nothing else. The 21 Day hold is typical of new sellers or accounts with low activity but yes, the $$ can move faster once tracking shows the item is delivered. If the items you sell on eBay are basically failed items on other venues what's the big issue if you have to wait a few days to get paid? Sounds like you've waited longer for them NOT to sell elsewhere.
Anyway, choice is yours of course and wish you the best with your sales efforts.

This Help page outlines the criteria that you must meet in order to no longer be under the Holds policy.

Why not? 3 days - or less - after delivery is way different than 21 days - which is jsut the maximum if you dont meet the earlier deadline qualification. They hold funds so the buyer can be refunded if they file a dispute that they win - but mainly they just want to see the buyer get his delivery & will release your funds after that. If you see the status show delivered then a call to Paypal might get your hold lifted right away instead of within 3 days so thats even faster.

Square is not an approved gateway for eBay to redirect a payment. Probably because they do not link very well with the eBay system, or one of the companies do not want to work with the other. The reason really is not that important.
Your holds are because eBay/ Paypal (which are separate companies) both want to make sure you are a creditable user of there services. Both companies have had issues with scammer buyers and sellers who try to game the system and run off with products or funds.
These holds will help make all users a better fit moving forward. With more activity on your eBay account, your history will show a better paper trail that can get your holds lifted, but for new or occasional users these holds will continue to be in place.
Good Luck Selling!

Can you explain why this is NOT acceptable?
You have two options aside from PayPal:

Bad move not using Paypal.... Trust me. I only use it as a buyer and a seller. On other sites I use, if they say, "no Paypal", that means no sale. Besides, I had someone hack my ebay account, and Paypal protected me.

You're too funny. If it's not acceptable to you, then do not use the site. It's as simple as that. Do you speed on the freeway if the posted speed limit isn't acceptable to you?
As stated, your options are very limited and it's definitely not worth going through all the trouble and expense to set up a merchant account and gateway that works with eBay. Square is not an accepted payment method.

You have two options aside from PayPal:
- Merchant account - your fees will be higher, and you may find that more of your money is held for a longer period than with PayPal
- Local pickup - you can take any form of payment you want: cash, money order, chickens, whatever.
Does the PayPal hold look more acceptable now?
The part about the Merchant account is false. I am a credit card merchant and my rate is about 26 percent lower then Paypal.
That said if you want to sell on eBay Paypal is a must, not because eBay says so but because the buyers say so. I resisted taking Paypal for years, then I got a message that changed my mind. It was from an eBay buyer that said that if I do not take Paypal then I must not be legit. This is when I realized what a good job eBay had done of brainwashing it's buyers about Paypal. As a credit card merchant I had to go through a credit check, jump through several hoops and earn my merchant account credit level. For Paypal they paid me to join (yes in the beginning they paid you $5 or $10 (I don't remember which) to join). to get my sellers account again no credit check no anything (still true today) but in this buyers eyes I was the fraud. Starting the next day we started taking Paypal and in 6 months our eBay sales more then doubled. So if you want to sell on eBay the buyers will insist that you take Paypal. Also Paypal is pretty fair, I my opinion Paypal is more fair to sellers then eBay is

My guess is that since PP has it's own swipe dongle, they aren't going to let Square in.
