Creating variations on categories that don't support variations?

I was able to create variations in a category that does not support variations by first, creating the listing in a category that does support variations, then, after the listing was completed,  changing the category.

However, that does not work now, I get a message:   "Item listed with variations may not be revised to category that does not support variations." 

Anybody know any further workarounds?

Sorry, I'm not aware of any way to get around the eBay policy on variations. Here is a post on a recent similar thread that explains more about what categories are eligible for variations, and why.
