I had a person purchase something from me earlier this month, they sent me a message a few days later saying that it was an unauthorized transaction and that theyd send it back as soon as they got it.
So they did send it back, and I recieved it today. No eBay case was ever opened so no official return ever took place. They included a letter that explained that a child used their credit card to open a paypal account, and that several ebay items were sent to several different locations and it was very confusing for them and said they needed me to cooperate, and they said they closed the paypal account and need me to send them a check for the refund.
Am I just paranoid for suspecting this is a scam? I'm concerned about the possibility of them getting two refunds if they're just making things up.
They said they closed the paypal account but I have no proof they did. The returned package had a new tracking number on it so if they happen to be a scammer, all they'd have to do is wait for the check, then open a return in ebay, enter the tracking and get a second refund.
What would you guys do? I really don't feel comfortable taking this all outside of eBay and Paypal. It was $25, which I know isn't tons but still.

I wouldn't do anything.

Do not send a check. It doesn't work that way.

I had a big problem doing any kind of return request when my item came back WITHOUT AN OFFICIAL return request started by the buyer. It would not let me do anything. Maybe, I missed something . I had to go to PP to do the refund.

Actually these types of my kid charged it, my husband charged it and I did not know, blah happens a lot. And it can be legitimate. It is frequent issue with chargebacks. Its ok as long as the payment processor shows that the transaction has been investigated and cancelled.
