Chargeback Question

Just got notice from PP that a purchase made Sept. 11 now has a chargeback open for unauthorized use of the cc. PP says they are reviewing with buyer's bank, so maybe he filed directly with his bank, not PP or ebay. There's no case opened in ebay. PP is holding the disputed amount (under $30) and say I don't need to do anything.

He purchased on Sept 11 and according to usps tracking, it was received on Sept 13 (as an aside, that's fantastic service going from midwest to California). It was mailed to his PP address of record.

He received it Sept 13, but didn't file until today, Oct 31. Why would he wait so long? It's not like he had to wait until he received his paper cc statement, he probably looks at his banking online (or maybe not?) If I end up refunding him, doesn't he have to return my item?

Any guidance is appreciated.

Chargeback Question

Make sure to upload the tracking number to the PayPal dispute and then sit tight. It can take some time to be resolved but if you upload the tracking you can't lose.

Chargeback Question

All you need is confirmation that the item was sent to the address on file and you will be covered.

As stated above, make sure the tracking info is uploaded to the case.

Chargeback Question

I had it happen too. They opened a PP case and lost then went to their bank. PP disputed the banks claim and I one. But not without the delivered tracking number readable online. Good luck!

Chargeback Question

That is the only way they can create a chargeback, the buyer has to dispute a charge on their credit card directly with the credit card company.  When there is a chargeback, there is no claim opened in Ebay.

Yes, all normal stuff when there is a chargeback.  Until it is resolved, your money will be on hold.

He purchased on Sept 11 and according to usps tracking, it was received on Sept 13 (as an aside, that's fantastic service going from midwest to California). It was mailed to his PP address of record.

What may have happened was he got is CC statement and didn't recognize the charge.  The way internet charges show on a CC stmt can be rather cryptic and not easily recognized.  So it could be an honest mistake.  I'd send a polite and professional email to the buyer in the Ebay email system and let them know you are aware of the chargeback being created in PP and you are wondering if there is a problem with his order.  Just be short and don't point any fingers or say anything to accuse the buyer of anything, stay completely professional.

It's not like he had to wait until he received his paper cc statement, he probably looks at his banking online (or maybe not?)

You don't know that.  Some people do and some people don't.  I'm one that pays my CC online, but I review my paper statement for details.

If I end up refunding him, doesn't he have to return my item?

No, if they win the chargeback, you won't get the item back as they are saying they don't know what the charge is for.  So they can't admit to having it if they are actually trying to get the item for free.  But honestly, most of these are just an honest mistake by the buyer.  So go from that point for now.

As others have suggested, get your tracking number loaded into the chargeback in your PP resolution center.  Also note what day they received the item per then tracking and if they left FB on your account, note that too.

On Wednesday, call PP.  Talk with someone and go over the tracking and receival by the customer.  If you shipped to the address on the PP payment notification and you shipped with tracking within a week of the time you received payment, you are covered under PP's Seller Protection.  The CSR should be able to take your money off hold.  PP will continue to fight the chargeback, but will give you access to your money because you are protected by the Seller Protection policy.
