Changes to Ad Fees/Promoted listings

What on earth is going on that Ebay is charging your selected Promoted Listing percentage based not just on the price you set for your item/s, but on the total including the shipping, AND the taxes? We don't receive that money, so why are we paying a percentage of it for Promoted Listings on top of regular fees?

I switched to selling on Ebay because it was a far better experience than Amazon, where I felt like I was being harvested for fees to run an online business, all while having zero say whatsoever like I was plugged into the Matrix. I'm feeling like Ebay is going that route, too. Am I the only one?

I'm a really small seller, and this is my first time in the community message boards. I can imagine other sellers have already complained about this, but wow. Do we have any say as sellers? How can we formally complain? Is that a thing anymore? I tried to get help using live chat, but they gave me no method to provide my own feedback regarding this matter. The response was "We will pass on your concern to the appropriate department". That's an unacceptable answer, Ebay.

You can thank the genius sellers who figured out they could list the item for $1 with 100 percent promoted listing and put all the real price into the shipping.

I think ebay would find sooner or later how to milk the sellers to the max without the help of that genius seller

You have the ultimate "say", you stop using Promotions or you can reduce your percentage to compensate for the fact that the fee is applied to the total sale amount instead of just the item.

FYI - It's been 18 months since eBay made the change to have PL fees apply to the sale total.

I'm sorry you got surprised by this.  But Ebay is pretty up front about fees.  However it is very important that sellers read the policies so they know what is happening and fees all sellers really need a handle on so they can price their stuff correctly.

On ever Order Ebay states what the seller fees are and in your MP reports are all the details.  We only get surprised by the fees if we don't do our homework and understand how the fees are charged.

Amazon charged fees on shipping too, not on sales tax, but they do on shipping.

"We will pass on your concern to the appropriate department" may be an unacceptable answer, but it is #1 on the script and consequently is the one that gets used most often.  You just have to accept this.

If you really want to blow your mind- look into the "halo" fees!   Once someone clicks on one of your promoted listings, you will be charged the promoted listing fee on ANY OTHER listing you may have for 30 days even if it has nothing to do with the original item or search and was found organically!!!!

Our only hope is that enough sellers wake up to the promoted listings scam and stop promoting.  We need to force ebay to focus on improving the website and experience instead of just fleecing its users.

I have no complaint about a company making money but  do expect something in return. PL is not working for sellers OR buyers since it screwed up the search so badly... it only works for ebay.

You made that sound like if someone purchased ANY of their items that the Halo fees would be charged.  That would only be accurate if the other items purchased were also promoted listings.

"For a Halo Item sale, the ad fee will be charged when a buyer purchases a promoted item other than the Standard ad item they clicked on within 30 days, as long as the purchased item is in an active Standard campaign at the time of sale. The ad fee will be based on the ad rate for the item sold at the time of sale."

"There are two ways an ad rate will be charged on listings that are active in the Promoted Listings Standard program: as a Direct sale or a Halo Item sale. A Direct sale is when a buyer purchases the same item that was featured in the Standard ad they originally clicked on within 30 days. A Halo Item sale is when a promoted item, different from the item originally featured in the ad the buyer clicked on, is purchased within 30 days of the original click."

100% my fault for not paying attention when the policy changed, therefore ending up surprised.

I will no longer be using PL. It's basically an oxygen tax at this point 🤡. Forward that to the appropriate department, Ebay.

I'm not sure I understand.  Ebay's policy that they charge the FVF on the entire amount the buyer pays has been in place since 2020 as they started onboarding everyone into Managed Payments.  And you have had sales in the past 3+ years that you should have noticed this.

As to Promoted Listings, the policy says the percentage you decide you want to used on Promoted listings is added to your normal FVF.   That isn't a change.

"The ad fee is based on the ad rate you chose, and is applied to the total sale amount of your item (including shipping, taxes, and any other applicable fees)"

@mam98031

You are correction the Halo situation- I did mean that "any promoted listing" would be charged the PL even if it was found organically- i did not word it clearly but that was my intent- nice catch

as to what the other person is also complaining about- the policy change to include shipping and sales tax and halo fees was not 3 years ago( ebay updates it policies with little to no notice and you cant see the old policies unless you had dated and saved them.)- that update was much more recent- maybe 6-9 months ago if i remember correctly. certainly when they started charging PL fees on the sales tax and shipping was the absolute nail in the coffin for me!  Made the decision simple- I would never promote again even if they gave me PL fee credits!

The update on how Ebay does their FVF happened in 2020 as I previously described.

https://www.ebay.com/sellercenter/resources/seller-updates/2020-fall/financials

Simplified fees:

  • Once activated for managed payments, sellers will pay an updated final value fee, consisting of a category-based percentage of the total amount of the sale, plus a $0.30 fixed fee per order.

Granted that isn't as well explained as it was later.  But that is when it started.

Welcome, what will You do if they start calculating the basic sell fee the same way as You described?

( (sale price + shipping cost) + Sales Tax ) x ( Basic Sell Fee Percentage) + 30 Cents

That doesn't justify ebay including fees on taxes.  That money never was anything the seller receives.
