Certified By Brand (watches, jewelry, handbags)

Thoughts on this new program? Does it hurt the small seller or will it not have much of an impact? Will it help the small seller by bringing more buyers to the platform looking for authentic product in these categories?

What is Certified by Brand?

Certified by Brand refers to watches, jewelry, and handbags inventory provided and authorized by the brand. It applies to items sold directly from a brand’s eBay storefront or by a brand-authorized seller on eBay. Currently Certified by Brand is only available for buyers located in the US. Check back for additional countries to be added.

Which brands are part of the program?

Currently, Certified by Brand is available for ALOR, Disney, Dooney & Bourke, Le Vian, Lika Behar Collection, Perrelet and Roman+Jules. Check back for updates and new watches, handbags, and jewelry brands.

In addition, new storefronts are launching soon: ADPT (All Day, Purpose, Terrain), Alberto Milani, Badgley Mischka, Diana M, Ernst Benz, I.Reiss, Konstantin Chaykin, Rpaige, Vianney Halter, and Zodiac Watches.

Certified By Brand (watches, jewelry, handbags)

What I'm curious about is, "Will this, does this, mean that I cannot sell those 'brands' as a small independent seller on a secondhand basis?"

The article doesn't mention any thing about that.  Say, I bought a Disney brand plush or a Dooney & Bourke bag, can I sell it?

If they advertise it so that the general public is aware of the program, it's possible that it will bring more buyers to ebay which could be a win. But I suspect that it won't make much of a difference either way.

It doesn't say that those brands can only be sold by those certified sellers so we should still be able to sell those brands whether they are new or used.

@wastingtime101 - as far as whether it will hurt small sellers, my opinion is we'll have to see if eBay moves to restrict sales of these brands in the future.

If it's handled like the Certified Refurbished program where it restricts certain conditions to be used only by sellers in the program, that could be cause for concern.

But so far it sounds like it might be more like an expansion on the existing Brand Outlet concept where certified brands and their authorized resellers will get special badges and maybe some promotions and featured status, in which case you could argue that may be playing favorites but not as detrimental as enacting restrictions.

I'm also really interested to see how eBay may leverage their new acquisition, Certilogo, to enhance the Certified By Brand program.

Looking at the solutions Certilogo offers I can see where eBay may make this technology available to certified brand sellers as a way to digitally ID and authenticate items.

I think the certification program is a great idea. I have had experience with it as a seller, Handbags, and Jewelry.

However I did buy several things for myself during covid, before this came out. One was a very large Diamond ring  mounted on a sapphire and Diamond band. It was expensive. I checked the sellers feedback, and also communicated with him multiple times. I was unable to get it to a jeweler because of covid. I was not concerned about it being authentic.

However it is an excellent idea.

I'll admit that was the first thought that came to my mind.

Thanks for the Certilogo info.

These are 2 different programs.  The authentication program is one thing and the Certified by Brand is a completely different program.
