Back in Oct 2020 I sold a item on ebay. On Nov 13 the buyer requested a return indicating the item doesn't work. The buyer had til Nov 27 to return the item. They provided a usps tracking number 9382020585500025194367 that still shows that it's in Pre-shipment meaning it was never dropped off.

Nov 27 passed and the item was never returned. I asked ebay to step in, and they told me to wait about a week as they were investigating.
On Dec 15 the case was ruled in my favor stating "The buyer did not return the item to you within the required timeframe. This case will not affect your seller performance. Any feedback left for this transaction will be removed." the funds that was placed on hold in my paypal were released.
Then 2 weeks later on Dec 29th I checked my paypal and noticed it has a negative balance of -$2,074.34.

I went to check my ebay messages and I get a message from ebay saying "We refunded the buyer for case #5253467237". stating that This case is now closed and your automatic payment method will be charged $2,375.00 in 10 days.
This was on dec 29th 2020, two weeks after it was resolved on Dec 15th in my favor. https://i.ibb.co/km5Fh1C/2.jpg
I went to check the Case details and it says:"We reviewed this case again and decided to refund $ 2,375.00 to the buyer. The refund amount of $ 2,375.00 will be recovered from you by eBay."

I check the case details and the tracking number that the buyer uploaded is no longer showing.

Luckily I took a screenshot from months ago of the case because I remember that tracking info seem to disappear whenever we escalate a case and ask ebay to step in.
I never got the item returned. The tracking still shows pre-shipment and not delivered. Any thoughts, suggestions or advice?

@arcade.gamer If this occurred as you have written than this is very disheartening to hear. I hope someone will tag one of the blues to provide some more details because this is not what is described in seller protections. I'm so sorry to read this....

Thank you. Yeah it's very disheartening. I'm currently trying to resolve it with ebay but I thought I should post about it to let people know that even if a case is closed in your favor, ebay can still reopen the case weeks later and change it. Hopefully the item will get returned because if I don't get the item back or my money back then I don't think I can use ebay anymore if it's that easy for people to take advantage of their system. I'm not saying there's fraud going on here but they're making it too easy for it to occur.

It appears you're posting with a different id from the one on which the sale took place, so it makes it a little more difficult to try to determine what might have happened.
Do you want to post the item number or describe what it was you sold?

How funny, I just looked and couldn't find such a sale so came on here to post what you did....

I have a separate buyer and seller account. i rather not disclose that sorry. is it uncommon for users to use different ids when posting on these forums?

Buyers do not have to use the return label that you or ebay provides for a return. That may explain why the tracking history shows no movement.
The buyer may have supplied a subsequent tracking number that shows "something" was delivered to you.
Did you happen to get anything lately (cheap/inexpensive/lightweight) delivered to you with a tracking number (from someone you don't know)?
To what city/state did you send your item to the buyer?

It is amazing what all buyers can talk eBay into doing. Crazy chit.

Not uncommon at all, it's what I do. People typically post using their buyer only ID on this forum. The difference is that YOU DO SELL on this ID so that added to the confusion....

You would have been better off to let the case time out and close.

After EBAY case was closed and ruled in your favor....is it possible Buyer asked their credit card company to reverse charges....that would explain why EBAY took money back from you.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of scammers around now.

No, it's not unusual at all. It just makes it harder to try to determine what might have gone wrong with only part of the facts.
Doesn't bother me if you prefer to have members to guess what happened. It's your problem transaction, not mine.

@caldreamer
If that were the case, the seller would have been notified of a chargeback either through PayPal or a payment dispute via eBay if they are in managed payments.
A reversal of the case simply "because ebay changed their mind" is sort of way funky.

I just wish we could see the whole picture.

The most likely reason for this has already been suggested ... the tracking # provided was probably the prepaid shipping label from the case, but the buyer probably used a different tracking # to return the item. Buyer provided this to eBay in an appeal of the original case, and won their appeal. eBay employees will not be able to confirm if this is the case or not, because they can't discuss account specific details. The OP can unravel this because the information would be in the case details, and probably in their emails as well.
Unfortunately, we only have part of the story here. I would have expected most sellers would have stayed on top of their accounts, especially if there was any suggestion (such as the type of item sold, which might have been gaming equipment of some type based on OP's ID) that there might be issues with the transaction.
Many members use posting IDs, or ask questions here from a buyer ID rather than their selling ID, but in this case, I have to wonder why OP has posted here at all, if they aren't going to tell the entire story or provide enough information for us to be able to help them or investigate the case at all, (which they haven't).
Given the likely type of item (video game equipment) and the value of the transaction (over $2,300), was this something like a PS5? There were a number of PS5 systems sold around that amount in that time frame, which was decried as scalping, price-gouging, and illegal on gaming forums. The sellers were heavily criticized for using unfair "bots" to buy up all the available systems within seconds as they were released, which was considered unfair and immoral, and it appears that those who were not able to buy their own systems as a result, considered those sellers to be fair game when they tried to realize the profits from their "illegal scalping". Both the "gouging" sellers and the buyers involved in this were very sophisticated and highly computer literate, so it's kind of a financial war between very advanced techno-geeks. I'm not saying that I agree with what was done on either side. I'm just pointing out that this situation probably isn't as straightforward as it might appear.
I don't expect to get an explanation about this, but since this is the most likely explanation for what happened, it seems likely to be a waste of time and would accomplish nothing.
