Are you the buyer or seller?
If you are the buyer, you can't cancel the sale. All you can do is message the seller and request that they cancel the sale. The seller does not have to cancel it. If they don't cancel it and if you don't pay, you get a non-payment strike against you. One isn't too much of a problem, but some people can block sales to people with multiple non-payment strikes.
If you are the seller, there is a selection on the drop down menu next to the sale to cancel the sale. Then you select the reason, it sound like the buyer requested the cancelation.
If you are saying that the sale was so long ago, that the selection on the drop down menu is no longer active, then you will need to contact ebay by phone to try to get it cancelled.
