Can't cancel order?

After being on ebay for years as a buyer I finally tried selling an item last night. Long story short--it was a disaster. Got a buyer who was very much trying to scam, but luckily I caught on and did not ship the item. Ebay didn't catch on to any of this until AFTER the buyer closed their account (they are no longer a registered user) and they sent me an email recommending I don't sell to them.

All I want to do at this point is cancel the sale and move on, but every time I try to cancel, I get a "Sorry, we're having a technical hiccup right now" message. Is this normal? I just want to cancel the sale and move on.

Call eBay.  Report the error.  It's the only way to hopefully get it fixed *and* to have notes on your account that you've tried to do right.  Then have one of them cancel the order for you while you're on the phone.

Can't cancel order?

@bgnoyes360  So the Buyer actually paid for the item?  If they paid and closed their account there is no place to send their money back.  If they did NOT pay then there is nothing to cancel.  If it was an Auction that ended and they did not pay wait 2 days (48 hours from the closing time) and process an Unpaid Item (UPI) in eBay's Resolution Center ... wait 4 days as required and when Buyer does not pay simply close the claim.

LOL - Welcome to the hard working side of the business!  I am sure this will give you a different persepctive of Sellers.

Now, congrats are in order for you even though the first sale went rough.  May I ask what kind of an item it was like expensive, high tech, etc.?

Can't cancel order?

I had accepted the offer but I did not actually receive a payment, although I did a dumb thing and provided the buyer with my PayPal email address because they said they needed it to get the payment to me (again, yes, that was dumb). I then received a fake email saying I got my PayPal payment, even though I didn't.

Right now the item is still listed as Sold, but I can't can't cancel the order. I also can't re-list, which might be a good thing because I'm not sure I want to deal with being a seller at this point.

And yeah, I was selling a Samsung Galaxy S8+. Selling a pricey item as a new seller certainly made me a target. I knew I was bing an idiot when I went with an offer from someone without feedback, but I thought "everyone starts somewhere!"

Stupid.

Okay, nevermind. I think I was unable to cancel the order because the seller deactivated their account and the order was basically canceled anyways. Or something like that. What I was able to do was simply delete the listing and the sale, so now it's like it was never there. I still can't relist the item, though.

Think I'll just stick to buying...

Okay, first of all we're not here to berate you and what happened ... if you read enough stories here then you know we've all stepped in it at times.  One thing you should immediately do for security purposes is change ALL your online passwords and if at all possible, set up a new email address with your PayPal account.  And yes, I mean right away.  You will have to update your listings too with the new email so payments get directed to your account properly.

Now, someone suggested calling eBay to try and get that Cancelled item issued resolved, IF you call I suggest asking for Trust & Safety Department since this was a scam ... they have (to my knowledge) some pretty deep access to the accounts so I think they can get that straightened out for you.

Thanks for the info. I did call ebay and report that this seller was a scammer, but I'm not sure if they'll pursue anything since it was just customer service. At this point I've managed to delete the listing and order, so everything is okay on that end. The only thing the scammer has is my email address, which they hopefully can't do much damage with. I've already changed my PayPal password, so I'm hoping I can just move on.
