Can buyers "trick" the return shipping tracking number?

Something that confused me. A buyer filed a return request (remorse). They uploaded a tracking that shows it got delivered to somewhere else far away (not where I'm at). And the automated ebay system is now saying I have to refund them because item is delivered to me. Ebay doesn't check if at least the zip code of the delivered tracking matches my return address on file?

That makes me wonder. I'm not saying the buyer did this because USPS could very well just decide to deliver to the totally wrong state. But if the ebay system doesn't check this, can't a buyer just upload ANY tracking number that shows delivered to any location within the timeframe of the return request and not actually return the item?

Yes, you have a point.  Did this buyer go through a CASE on ebay - is that the way they downloaded an address?  If that is the case - you can call Ebay and ask why this happened - as the delivery shows the package received in another city that is NOT yours.

It could have been a mistake in tracking number, or USPS sometimes reuses tracking numbers. If it doesn't change in a couple of days, showing movement towards you, call customer service.

Call customer service today - preferably around 10 am PST and talk to a US rep. Could be a glitch in the system or the buyer may have had 2 returns and put the wrong tracking numbers into the wrong return case.

You should definitely not refund - but do call CS today - don't wait!

This ^^^:)

Call today.

Also double check your address for returns in your "my ebay" 1st.

If that is correct the buyer could have sent something to a friend using their own label then they uploaded that tracking to try and get a refund.

I had this happen to a friend who sold an expensive item, the buyer was trying to pull a fast one.

She called and had the case closed/no refund to the buyer.

That is why it is important to manually upload your tracking number as soon as you have it.  So if buyers do try and manipulate it, yours is already there.
