Can buyer leave feedback after UPI closes w/ payment?

The winning bidder asked me twice to cancel the day after the auction ended. I want to open UPI in another day so he could get a strike. Today he says he will pay by Friday, which means he would pay before UPI deadline.

I had a buyer once who gave me negative feedback because he wanted to cancel but paid out of fear of a strike against him, however, that happened before UPI was ever opened. My question now is, can a buyer still leave feedback if an UPI was opened, and he pays ultimately? At this point, I feel like I don’t want to sell it to this buyer anymore, should I just cancel? Or go through with UPI? Thanks!

Can buyer leave feedback after UPI closes w/ payment?

Yes.

If the buyer pays, the UPI ends and the transaction continues as normal.

After all, at least some UPIs are opened by anxious sellers when the buyer is slow to pay, not refusing to pay.

Which is why refusing to cancel when the buyer specifically requests it, is a mistake.

If the buyer asks politely, he is no more evil than a grocery shopper who leaves the box of Sugar Rocket Crunchies on the shelf in the toothpaste aisle.

He changed his mind.

That's all.

It takes only a few seconds to cancel and get the item back out where it can be seen by someone who will actually pay for the Sugar Rocket Crunchies (probably with Type II diabetes, but...)

And if you are really miffed, you can add him to your Blocked Bidder List.

And you get your FVF back.

He can leave feedback for a cancellation. And you can leave a Response to FB, which does not have to be positive, although the most effective Responses are calm and factual.

Meanwhile, the UID cannot be opened for two days (during which the buyer gets more annoyed) and cannot be closed for four more days, during which your item cannot be purchased by anyone else.

The UID is not visible on the buyer's account.* He cannot leave FB if he doesn't pay.

But if he pays, you ship.

Not every transaction will go smoothly.

It's business, not personal.

Given the average value of your watches, and that you do not list a lot of items, a single neg will have a strong impact on your feedback.

FB is not considered by eBay in assessing your seller account.

But a refusal to deal with a Dispute, which you believe is a possibility with this buyer, does lead to Defects and will have a very strong effect on your selling account.

In your place, I would swallow my pride, end the Dispute, eat the FVF, Block the bidder (including communication) and move on.

It seems from these Boards that most UIDs are from auctions. An easy fix for someone who knows the value of his stock, like you, would be to use Fixed Price/ Immediate Payment Required. Then your listings would stay visible until someone actually pays.

* I think UIDs should be as visible as bid retractions, but that's another story.

Your choice...

Yes a buyer can leave any feedback they want if you file a UPI and they end up paying. That's the loophole... buyers can easily avoid UPIs now. And they can just end up filing a return afterwards... ultimately resulting in the same thing as them not buying from you from their perspective.

Once you open a UID you cannot change it to a cancel as far as I know. Why didn't you cancel when he asked you to? Yes he can leave you negative feedback if he pays. He can even leave you negative feedback if he doesn't pay and it will stand until the UID is closed.

A UID is a request for payment. If the buyer has already told you they don't want the item, a UID is opening YOU up to mischief.

So, let me see if I understand this clearly:

A bidder won your auction and then asked you to cancel.

You didn't cancel because, well, s/he won the auction and is supposed to pay.

You want to open a UPI to punish the buyer for not paying, even though s/he asked you--twice--if you would cancel.

It occurs to you that the buyer can leave negative feedback and now, suddenly, you want to cancel?

Is that about right?

Buyer snipped at the last minute and doesn’t pay. If non paying buyer can just cancel w/o a strike, then what are the strikes good for?

Can buyer leave feedback after UPI closes w/ payment?

What I want is to have a strike recorded against the buyer, so other sellers don’t have to go through this.

What i don’t understand is why is there even a “buyer request cancellation” option, when an unpaid item strike is already in place?

When you get caught running a red light, you get points deducted from your driver license, right? “Buyer request cancellation” is like saying I’m cancelling the red light that I ran so my points won’t be deducted, or else I’m leaving a bad yelp review on the police department.

Thanks! Reading similar discussions from a few years ago, most sellers urge the OP to get an UID so that the buyer gets a strike, like it’s a service to the community. It seems that sentiment has changed? Regardless, thanks again for your reply. I’m cancelling it now.

Can buyer leave feedback after UPI closes w/ payment?

The buyer requested cancellation (twice) before you could open the UID which you could not do for 48 hours (96 hours if you are non-US based).

Only a seller can cancel, but 'buyer request' is the one reason for cancellation that has no impact on the seller's account.

BTW.

The buyer can leave FB before the UID closes, but not after. If he leaves FB early, you can ask Customer Service to remove it.

If he pays, he can leave feedback and it is very unlikely that Customer Service will agree to remove it.

As has been stated, it is really best to cancel if the buyer requests it; you could find yourself with a return.

@crazyfist88

A bid retraction is not a request to cancel.
A retraction happens before the end of an auction. It has no impact on the seller, nor does she get  say in approving it. The retraction shows on the buyer's FB page.
A request to cancel happens AFTER the buyer has won an auction or agreed to purchase a Fixed Price item.
The seller can agree or refuse. If she agrees the transaction ends, she gets her FVF back immediately and can relist immediately. Both parties can leave FB if they wish.
If the seller refuses, she can open an Unpaid Item Dispute between 48 and 96 hours after the purchase, depending on her location.
The buyer then has 96 hours to pay. If he does, the transaction continues as normal and both parties can leave feedback.
If he does not, he loses the Dispute and gets a Strike. (Two or more of those and his future attempts to buy will be Blocked by most sellers.) He cannot leave feedback. The seller gets her FVF back.

Disputes lost or won do not appear publically and no one is allowed to mention them in Feedback.
