I am a longtime ebay user (under a different account), going back to 1999. I've been buying and selling here that whole time. I just bought an expensive piece of IT gear for our business yesterday from a seller who had 5 of them listed. It was paid for immediately, from my company credit card.
Last night I got a notice that the seller canceled the transaction:
We are sorry to let you know that XXXXXXXX cancelled your order and mentioned the cancelled reason as 'I'm out of stock or the item is damaged.'
This morning I looked at the auction, and the same item is still listed, 4 of them available, but now for $1000 more than the price I paid yesterday (With Buy It Now, incidentally).
I consider myself a pretty honest seller and I always stick by my sales even if I do an auction and the final price is lower than I'd hoped (though in this case, it was a buy it now, sold for the going rate). This strikes me as a particularly crappy thing to do. Also, now I have to wait almost a week for ebay to refund the money to my credit card so I can buy it from someone else, because this was expensive enough that it basically maxed out that card.
If the cancellation reason wasn't to jack up the price by $1000, and it was really out of stock, shouldn't they have instead delisted that auction? I can't really think of a reason to to this other than to make it more expensive.

Hi @gammaraydigital ,
If that Seller has a low Feedback count then they may lack experience and the OOS strike is a serious one. If they get enough of those they risk restrictions, suspensions or permanent closure (you probably know all that having been around since 1999).
Many Sellers do not understand the best way to handle Auctions on eBay ... I use them a lot but my starting price is the same one I would use if the item were listed as a Fixed Priced Buy it Now ... one bid and I make my profit ... more bids means more profit.
Sellers may be influenced wrongly by eBay one where to start their Auctions and the situation you just went through could be the result of that.
Regards,
Mr. L

High feedback count, and this was a Buy It Now, not an auction.
They had 5 of these listed for $3550 each, all brand new items in the original boxes. Now they have 4 listed at $4600. I know they weren't "damaged" and if they're out of stock then why are the other 4 still up there?

I would contact ebay customer service about it. Obviously they were not out of stock and I believe to say that they were just to jack up the price like that must be some sort of violation.

Sorry @gammaraydigital , you mentioned "auction" in your post so I went there incorrectly. Good question on the Seller's item ... only they can answer that. Calling eBay would be a waste of time, you might consider using the "Report item" link on the listing instead.

Thanks. yeah I just filed a report. super lame.

the buyer has given themselves a big defect...most of the time you get a seller like this and they will claim that your address is incorrect or that you asked to cancel it
most of the time a canceled sale is just a lie but sellers will also lie to sell it for more

Leave negative feedback. It won't matter, but you'll feel better. 😀

You can't leave feedback if it was canceled

If the seller cancelled the sale, the buyer can leave feedback.

No, they can't. The usual "leave feedback" button is not there:
Here's the same user interface, on the same page, from a successful purchase made a few weeks ago:

If the seller cancelled a transaction, the buyer may be able to leave feedback. It's happened and is happening.
In the situation where it was cancelled due to non-payment, then the following from the help section applies:
"If you canceled the order because the buyer didn't pay, any feedback left by the buyer will be removed and your seller standards won't be affected"

Well, all I can say is that there is no option for me to leave feedback. Seller canceled the order, not me, after it was paid. I paid for the item immediately after clicking the Buy It Now button, and my card was charged.
I can find no "leave feedback" buttons or links on any page related to the purchase, the order details, or the cancellation details.

Probably one of those things that is not supposed to happen, but does now and then. Other sellers have posted about it happening to them. Whatever. We shall plod blindly forward. Have a good one!

For a thousand dollars I'd be willing to eat a negative and a OOS.
Go to the feedback forum- leave feedback and there should be and area where you can select feedback for sales and purchases at the top.
Not sure if that workaround will...work but it is worth a shot
