Buyers Paying Full Price Instead of Accepting Offer...

This has happened a number of times, I understand HOW it happens, I want to know WHY.

Buyer makes me an offer > I counter their offer > Buyer pays full price.

I understand the logistics. Buyer needs to ACCEPT my offer. If they click "Buy It Now" or "Add To Cart" they're paying asking price and by-passing the offer/discount.

New buyers don't know any better, I get that... but what about Experienced/Long time EBayers ... what's their excuse? they should know better ... so WHAT WENT WRONG? Did they already have the item added to cart when they sent me an offer, and forget to go back to click accept and just pay for the cart?

I don't believe it's a timing issue. I've had buyers make me offers where either before I do or as I'm about to accept/counter the offer, they have bought the item full price. That's happened. But this is also something that happens with 5, 10, 20 minute delays or more.

This doesnt happen all the time, but I've had it happen at least a handful of times.

Thoughts? I mean... literally did someone have it in their cart before making an offer and forget to accept? Or did someone see the offer and go click buy it now? It's just perplexing

IT's happened to me.  They are buying it directly from the ad and not from the offer that you sent them. If you want, you can always refund the extra . Otherwise, let it go unless they ask you to refund the difference.  Many buyers use their cellphones and it was probably easier and faster to go to the actual listing instead of looking for the email that has the lower price.

Ok, again, I understand the basic logistics, but I'll bite on your phone theory.

I use my phone for 99.99% of my EBay work. When I go to a listing, if I have an offer from the seller, it's front and center on the listing. On a listing, I have to scroll down to get past the offer the seller sent. (I never use emails to go find the offer from a seller...). The offer is also available in the messages and notifications sections of the app... but if you say they just go to the ad on their phone, the offer is literally there front and center at the top when you open the ad.

Also, "experienced" EBayers I expect more from. I mean 500, 750, 1000+ feedback. Not like EBay is something they use once in a blue moon.

I don't disagree with you, but I'm still left in disbelief. I mean... we aren't talking a $1-2 savings...

I don't refund the buyer the difference unless they ask. They went to check out, were presented a price and agreed to pay it. It's POSSIBLE they never saw my offer, unlikely but possible. I did have one buyer accuse me of "changing" the price til I explained to him what HE did and not me. I literally have 0 control over what they do.

That experience can work for you or against you.

I have made the same mistake when accepting an offer. If you are accustomed to performing a certain series of actions -- that you have done the same way thousands of times before, without exception -- it can take conscious effort to break the pattern and use an unfamiliar procedure.

What MsRodriguez said, they're purchasing it from the ad rather than from the offer.   It's super common.  I'll bet 1/3 of my sent offers, pay full price, on a regular basis.   I don't accept offers, I only send them & it still happens constantly.  In all the times it's happened (hundreds) only twice has anyone ever noticed & contacted me about it.

Hi, it’s possible they really want the item, and decide it’s more expedient just to click Buy It Now.

It's hard to miss the offered price when using PC.

When I go to an item that has a pending offer there's a box or banner that pops up about the offer.  Maybe it's something with the app?

Understandable, but in this case the buyer sent me an offer, and I sent a counter. Not saying it negates the line of thinking, but I mean the person was already active in an offer. I figured they wouldn't have ditched the effort. It also wasnt like they offered then gave up and clicked Buy It Now. I mean I countered like 15 min later and I saw sold full price about 7 minutes after that. Idk, just odd to me still 🙄. I'm happy to make the money but I fret the "You switched the price!" Garbage

Agreed, been there. Literally had people send me offers and within a minute or two they clicked buy it now before i could respond. Honestly the guy sent an offer, 15mins later i countered, and then 7 mins later they purchased. So, again, I don't gully see the timing argument or haste here.

I understand it in theory and have experienced it multiple times. This one and it's timing just puzzled me though!

Hey, who am I to complain when I get full price for an item 🤣

At least for me on the app, I have no issues. It's huge at the top of the listng when you go to it. Literally I open a listing and this is what I see. I have to scroll down to get past it...

I also figure, if you have the app... you'll get an email and the associated push notification. If you have push notifications tjrned on within your app, you'll get that push notification. If you open the app, you'll have a message, an internal notification, it will be under your Bids/Offers section, and on the listing itself it will show you this. I'm not sure if I missed anything, but my point is EBay makes it hard to miss the fact that you received an offer.

I also feel like if YOU make someone an offer, you're going to have an eye open to see if that offer gets accepted/countered/declined. I know many of us get flooded with seller offers we dont care to see, but the buyer initiated with an offer, so I feel they are/should be more invested.

Android App example of what I see on a current listing ad where I have an offer from the seller.

I have just done this. I reviewed the offer I’d been sent but the problem is that that page seems to have a “buy now” button on it. So I’m on an offer page with a great big button saying buy now, which is what I want to do but it does it at the original price which was hidden on the screen.

so a system designed to fail - deliberate?

I’ve had to message the seller. I’d already rejected higher offers to

me, so clearly I was never going to buy at full price.
