The buyer won the bid for the item but never got around to paying. I contacted them to see if they were planning on paying, and recieved no response. I filed the unpaid item case, and won cause they didn't respond. Now they have opened a case asking for a refund for this item that they didn't even pay for.
What do I even do in this situation? Thank you.

Here's another example of a buyer being able to open INR on a closed Unpaid Item ... Will this loophole ever get looked at?
Call eBay and have them close the INR in your favor. Point out to them that a successful UID was closed against the buyer.

Didn't Trinton or another blue tell us that the loophole is intentional and here to stay? Because ebay doesn't know if the buyer paid using a method they don't know about? (which is silly anf stupid and ridiculous because the buyer isn't covered by the MBG if they didn't pay through ebay checkout using an approved method).

I also remember a blue saying that once or twice. They don't consider it a loophole.
I would call cs to have it closed. I wouldn't be comfortable waiting to see if it would close on its own.

Wow, first time I've ever heard of this. Crazy stuff. Just the fact that the case was closed in the sellers favor should prevent any future cases being open. That's just nutty.

I agree with the silly and stupid 😞
The UID closed without verified payment. To say that it might have been paid by another method completely invalidates the Unpaid Process.
INR should be completely blocked when UID closes without payment. "This item does not qualify for the MBG"
No valid payment method - no MBG - therefore no INR - the end
eBay MBG states:
Covered | Purchases are covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee when all of the following are true:

So it's just another lame attempt to catch off-site payments that doesn't do anything for a buyer? And then what happens to the seller, both from a punitive standpoint and if the seller ignores the INR? What a short-sighted, pointless rule is this?!

I believe Trinton did say that and the reason given was that there are millions of items for sale on eBay where other payment methods beyond PayPal or Credit Card are allowed (Motors and Adult material being the two major ones).
Just because a transaction is not covered by the MBG doesn't mean that a buyer is completely frozen out from making a claim for non-reciept or SNAD.

Hi @penguins_dont_fly, this would not be a loophole requiring attention but instead is the intended design. Since we are not always able to recognize payment, we want to allow a buyer to open a request through the eBay Money Back Guarantee in case they did pay for the item and have proof of this. If the buyer does not provide proof of payment, the seller would win any escalated claim. When a seller is certain that they did not receive payment, they should have not concerns with an open request and can respond as they see fit to help clarify this for the buyer.

If seller ignores the dispute and it times out will ebay issue the seller a resolution defect?

Please clarify "Since we are not always able to recognize payment" ... I really want to understand when a non recognized payment is covered by the MBG.
Recognized payment is a requirement of the MBG.
INR is a benefit of the MBG.
If a buyer has proof of payment on a closed UID, then the onus should be on the BUYER to have to call eBay and say "Hey, I paid for this" either during the UID process or if/when they are blocked from INR. A seller should not have to prove what is already recorded by the UID.
