A buyer has sent me a cancellation request on a item he just purchased (hasn't paid yet) but then he messages me to reject that request. Is this a scam of some sort?

They haven't paid yet so I'd cancel and let them know they could re-purchase if they still want the item.
They could be trying to avoid an unpaid item case.

The buyer might have confused this with a different purchase. Still....sounds like kind of a scatterbrain. Up to you.
I'd cancel as per the request and then write to him as suggested, telling him to go ahead and purchase again. You can pretend you'd already cancelled before you saw his message. He won't know.
Or you could block him.
