Buyer returns item - doesn't pack it, just throws it in box

3 weeks or so after getting it, buyer decides the item doesn't work, doesn't contact me, goes straight to ebay and the 1st I hear about it is when I get an email saying the case has been decided in the buyers favor - well, that's to be expected when we as the seller have no way to say anything, have literally zero input, so today I get the item back, a power amplifier that was in great shape when I sold it, even have pictures of it showing the output bias, buyer didn't wrap it or anything, put it in a box, shipped it back to me - which I paid for of course.
And again, isn't a single thing I can say or do about it. Literally no possible way to contact ebay about it, you are just screwed as the seller.
In a normal transaction if there is a problem, there is 2 way communication but ebay doesn't allow that. As a seller, they send you messages that you can't reply to , not allowing you to say anything.
I know exactly what happened - the buyer bought the amp and the reason it took so long to stop working is he hooked it up to 2 pairs of 4 ohm speakers and after a few weeks, stout as it is the excessive heat was too much and something went - customer contacts ebay, sends me back an item beat to **bleep**,.
So glad it's about over. I am just trying to dump everything I have left and I quit, no one should be forced to run a business like they make u

There is recourse if the seller offers free returns. When the item comes back all beat up you can deduct up to 50 percent of the sale. There was a post here many months ago with Ebay exec Bob and he said, ABSOLUTELY, ebay will stand behind that, but you have to offer free returns to get that to work.

I have to add to this post that if you use the free returns I believe you are going to have a heck of a lot less trouble from buyers claiming all kinds of nonsense and dinging your service metrics with false Snads just to get their return shipping back. The other plus is you DO get to deduct the cost of the damaged/ taken apart whatever item.

I'll let others try and help you as I'm not even sure that listing isn't in violation of policy.

I know you are ticked about the lack of packing from the buyer but he may have thought that since it is not working, there was no reason to protect it further. Just get it back to you.

There is no excuse for this. How hard would it be for the buyer to stick the item back into the packaging it was sent to them in?

I have had this happen to me several times in the past. I was actually amazed that some of the items made it back intact with no additional damage.

Buyer has the responsibility to return the item in the same condition in which it was sent.

If you buy from a B&M and destroy an item, then try to return it - they have no obligation to refund your money.

Sellers who offer free returns can deduct up to 50% off as long as the buyer doesn't claim SNAD and uses another reason such as fit.

For my category, they virtually alwayss claim SNAD regardless of the actual reason because they know they'll get free return shipping that way.

This offer is somewhat empty on behalf of eBay.

Then they just charge back with the CC co if they don't get what they want.

The chargeback for the balance that you withheld is a possibility. I am not sure how that would work out with PP with them getting screen shots of what was allowed to happen on Ebay. That is definately a good question for PP. I will ask them.

I am also wondering when Ebay switches to their own managed payment system if this will give a seller a better chance to win a chargeback such as this with a damaged return. That would be GROOVY. lol.

If it works anything like the major competitor, then if they get a chargeback, you will have it charged through to your account with a penalty.

The outcome with a bank chargeback(not PayPal) depends on the policies of the bank holding the account. Some have reasonable standards and others don't.
