Buyer not able to complete payment.

I am at a total loss.  I recently sold a trading card for $1700. Buyer contacted me early to let me know he was having trouble processing payment. He tried several different payment options and nothing worked.  He attempted to call eBay several times, confirmed there was no problem through his bank, but eBay can't seem to figure out what the problem is. eBay says there are no problems  or restrictions on my end and the buyer just has to contact them.  Meanwhile, I don't know what to do with the transaction. I can't really fairly relist the item as but is willing to pay, yet I am out $1700. At this point I feel like cancelling the transaction if I can do so without any negative repercussions for the buyer, and buyer and I  can do business directly if we choose. Any suggestions?

Fair enough, just from the responses it makes it sound like buyers are running rampant with scamming sellers. I'm sure it happens, just maybe more than I thought.

I am now with my payments. I thought I had put this info in previously but I must not have.

Gotcha, I was just wondering if people run into that quite a bit with buyer's.

@afonnes2014  They absolutely do, though not typically with Vault tx's.  From what we could see, without the missing info, this seemed classic, mainly b/c you are a low FB seller & it was an expensive and/or highly desirable item.   Both of those things make you a higher target for a scam.

Buyer not able to complete payment.

Payment finally was able to go through for buyer last night a few hours after this post. I guess the problem is that I'm too nice and I should just cancel the transaction after 4 days regardless of circumstances, seems to be the consensus here.

Appreciate all the responses, but though I may be new to eBay, I'm not naive to the fact that there are untrustworthy people out there. I'm probably  more skeptical/cynical than most people, but I like to at least give someone a fair chance to prove they are not being deceptive before I assume they are. Still waiting on the actual funds to show up in my account, but it's not on hold anymore.

Thanks for the response, this was helpful to know.

No, only one card, but you responded after circumstances changed. I wouldn't have wasted anyone's time if I didn't have a genuine problem.  The item was in the eBay vault, so I don't believe I actually have control over when eBay releases it to the buyer, it appears they transfer ownership once payment is received.

High priced item = scammer galore. Just saying, it's not your responsibility to ask Ebay why a buyer's purchase cannot go through. It does or does not. After 4 days cancel for non-payment, block the buyer, report for non-payment and move on.

Also I am not understanding why everyone assumes buyer is a scammer. I was the one to suggest shipping the item to the buyer as a last resort if nothing else worked, because it seems ridiculous that we can't complete a transaction. We both (seller and buyer) spoke to eBay numerous times. Only after payment did I realize I had never put in new payment info, so I'm not sure if that had something to do with the problem. Not one time did an agent ever mention me having outdated payment info, despite speaking to probably 5-6 people.  Garbage customer service, evidenced by the fact that so many people come here for answers.

Are you saying you were willing to ship the item to the buyer before they were able to pay, to try and “solve” the buyer’s payment issues?

@gone.c-33  No, I think they meant as opposed to leaving it in the Vault.  But they never mentioned this was a Vault tx initially, which is why so many, self included thought it was a scam.  New user, expensive item, what could go wrong and @afonnes2014  everyone was honestly trying to help you.  If you were a Mentor on here or even a user on here, you'd understand that we see these scams mulitple times/day.  They all have 1 thing in common, new or low FB user & high priced item and those sellers are often out the money.  That's why it appeared this was a scam, esp since you left out a signifcant amount of info that would have led us to believe otherwise.  And yeah, I'd rather you accidentally cancel a legit tx, than be out $1700, as we see here every single day.

To clarify, no one felt you were wasting their time.  Our purpose here is to help you.

However, you did, in your original message, omit some important information.  And that lack of information led most of us here to be concerned that you might be the subject of a scam.  Glad it's all straightened out now.  Let us know when the payment shows up in your account.

Buyer not able to complete payment.

I apologize if I seemed rude at all, though I do think people missed some of the info about buyer communication in my post and I didn't really think the item being in the vault was relevant to my question.  Eh, it is what it is.  Should I expect about 1-2 business days for the funds to show up in my bank after payment? They were on hold until I put in bank info, but it has now been verified and no longer on hold as of sometime this morning or afternoon.  Thanks again

Buyer not able to complete payment.

The seller has to issue a buyer didnt pay reason to cancel and have a strike issued against the scam buyer.  It doesn't happen automatically by ebay.

It happens automatically if you have your account settings setup that way.

No worries.  Sorry, IDK how the Vault works but if it's like other categories, how long it takes for the payment to show up in your acct depends on your bank.  Typically 1-4 days.
