i just got a positive feedback from a buyer who joked that they will probably return it if the Dodgers lose, because they bought a Dodgers item. i know it's a joke and all, but still because i have free returns i don't really think it's funny that this guy talks about abusing the system.

Technically, the only way for a buyer to abuse the system when a seller offers returns or free returns, would be for the buyer to return something in the condition it wasn't received in (tags removed, altered, worn, washed, soiled, another item substituted, damaged, etc)
Returning something because your favorite team lost, would not be an abuse of the system since that is not a disallowed reason for returns when a seller offers an unconditional return policy.

I just want to put this up again for the OP and add that even though such a return wouldn't be an abuse of the system, I wouldn't like to see that kind of comment in my feedback either. I don't like any comment that suggests I'm easy to take advantage of. Even though unconditional and free returns are an open door for buyers who want free look-sees.
On the other hand, I have a feedback on my profile that praises me for giving the buyer their 69th feedback, and exclaims that it was the best 69 they ever got. So what can you do? Sometimes you just wince and hope that it drops quickly off the screen.

That is cringe worthy feedback!

But it is so interesting and revealing that a return to a seller who offers free returns is considered to be an abuse of the system. Not that that is uncommon on this Board, but still interesting and revealing.
Perhaps it is not so much the buyer's fault/s, but the seller's who list with free returns when they really don't want any returns.
Of course I understand no seller wants a return, but if it is so offensive...maybe go to no returns. Just a thought. Buyers will think that free returns actually means you can...return.

Well, I offer returns on most things but I won't say that I welcome them. I accept returns mainly because it's better than the alternative, which is to have a returns not accepted policy and assume the higher risk that a determined buyer will open a SNAD case, costing me even more $ in return shipping. With a few, heavier, NWT items, I offer free shipping but no returns. It rarely backfires.
Having said that - when a buyer buys from me more than once and returns more than one item, I block them. I consider that buyer a profit vacuum and want to close the door on further losses.
Even a non SNAD return costs me something, even if s/h wasn't free and doesn't have to be refunded. All returns represent lost time, often amounting to weeks and with the volume of sales dropping as it has, this year, it's discouraging to be unable to rely on keeping what little $ comes in. Buyers have a lot of time to decide to return things, and with the seasonal nature of clothing (what I mainly sell) , it's often difficult to relist and resell an item in the current season.
For me, with clothing being such a high return category, FREE returns is completely out of the question, and since restocking fees were eliminated, free shipping is something I've had to rethink and adjust and am still rethinking and adjusting.

No, not all buyers will steal, lie, and cheat you. But don't forget some will.

I understand that no seller would welcome them but there is a difference between not welcoming them, and fighting it with hostility. As in the listings that state they take returns, but then say in the description that they only take returns if they have misrepresented something, and go on to say they never misrepresent something~they really do NOT take returns~that is really a no returns policy taking advantage of saying they take returns when they have no intention of doing so, to get increased visibility and to project a false sense of security. It's been said this is negativity but I didn't create those listings.
Having said that - when a buyer buys from me more than once and returns more than one item, I block them. I consider that buyer a profit vacuum and want to close the door on further losses.
I understand; it's a smart business decision~I have no problem with that. I don't buy to return~

Free returns for a category like clothing, that is prone to returns, can be a hard thing to offer. I understand.

Well it's not a very nice thing of them to say, but I wouldn't worry about it. I would think if anyone says anything like that, that they wouldn't send the item back because they know you could point out that feedback to ebay.

I too think it's just a joke - but there are some buyers who return things for alot of funny reasons thus costing a seller time and money.
I see no hositility in this posters listings as far as returns - so we're kind of going off track. Simple solution to sellers with TOS you don't agree with - hit the back button. There are all types of people selling on Ebay - I'm sure there is a seller here that buyer will approve of.

Why hit the back button? If he takes returns, he takes returns. Ebay will approve a return.

What does it matter what the feedback says? The seller has free returns and that means any reason, including the team losing, results in a free return.

That’s not her point or what she was referring to. She’s saying if you disagree with the sellers TOS, hit the back button. Why would you buy from a seller if you don’t agree their TOS? Why give them the sale?
