Buyer has paid for item. Now does not want it. Wants a refund.

Buyer bid and paid (PayPal) for item on 02-10-20.  Tried to contact buyer for 10 days, no reply to invoices or emails.  Items cost $4500.00.  Now on 02-26-20  doesn't want item and asked for a refund. Didn't give a reason just said, she thinks she wants to back out.  What would you do??

If they paid, why didn't you ship? What were you emailing about?

It's practically 3 weeks later; I'd ask to cancel too.

Do it.

You'll be out Paypal fees, but at this point the customer can just claim SNAD and force a return.

For the future, you can find buyers' phone number in either the Ebay or Paypal transaction info (forget which).

Apparently the item is a super huge thingamabob that according to the OP is two pallets worth (I'm assuming disassembled). Something like that would require freight shipping which involves more coordination than just "ship it, and forget it". The freight company most likely needs to know some info about the shipping address like how large their driveway is, if there is room for a truck container, is there a loading dock, forklifts, etc. And the most importantly, if the address is a business building or just a residence. There'd be issues if the freight company just incorrectly assumes the buyer has all these and drives the item over to them.

These issues are totally unforeseen when buyers and sellers don't have experience with freight size item transactions. I learned the hard way one time as a buyer of something this large.

And the flip side too...who WOULD WANT ONE?

I have some great one liners for this thread that I can't post darnnit!

Took me a while to sift thru one-liners before I selected that one ....

But if the buyer returns it using a USPS medium FR box, then the fun begins ...............

UPDATE ON 20-28-2020   Item is very big broke down on two pallets.  I sent her an invoice as soon as the auction was over  She paid a few hours after auction ended thru paypal ($4500.00).  The next day or so I Ebay messaged her to ask if the shipping address had a dock, forklift, commercial or residential.  I needed this info so the shipper could calculate my cost of shipping.  She never returned my questions, ebay messaged her 3 or 4 times.   Some days later she says she does want the item and asks for refund.  Since everybody on this forum has said refund and forget about it....  I thought, yup good advise.  So I called ebay they said all fees( listing, final value) will be refunded.  Paypal says I will eat the $142.94 in their fees...  WHAT??? ....  Pay pal futher said "Oh,  reach out to her and see if she will pay your fees".   I asked PayPal what happens if she refuses to pay me fees of $142.94.  Paypal said  that would be too bad.  Why wouldn't paypal just also refund like ebay.  What would you do at this point if you where me??

because Paypal introduced the new policy this past year of refunds would result in fees...that was why many sellers were quite angry. But not ask paypal, ask eb if can charge her the cost for the paypal fees...other wise buyer will just turn to ebay and complain that you charged her extra money... but if you discuss it with ebay first maybe able to do it and them give you some protection from the buyer opening a case or whatever?

@Anonymous can you give some insight here?

The message that Paypal may be senting to buyers is.  Hey, I will bid on this huge thing that can't be sent without the seller contacting me first, and this auction is a reserve auction, so I'll set my high bid at 10 times more than the item is worth and if a bidding wars starts and someone runs my bid up more then i'm willing to pay,  I will ask for a refund.   I just see where someone could find cracks and abuse the seller.

I always thought once purchased there was no refunding... Period... just because the seller changed their mind.

you don't have accept returns, but you have to accept refunds... you can say you won't, but ultimately ebay will rule for refund most of the time.. depends on situation and length of time.

Hi @nuclearomen, we aren't able to speak to fees assessed by PayPal nor are we able to offer any protections for this third party fee. Any partial refund would need to be agreed upon by the buyer and the seller, and a cancellation on eBay would automatically refund the full amount.

Because PayPal is stupid. I admit I am one who is still annoyed at this PayPal policy change. Unless the buyer agrees to pay it for you, there really is nothing you can do.
