I shipped an item flat rate and the buyer is claiming that they damaged the item opening the package. They requested a partial return and after I asked for pictures, which I haven’t received, said they would take a full refund for a return. It seems a little fishy to me and they have enough feedbacks to know the process and open an INAD with pictures. What should I do with this?

They are NOT required to send you pictures - that in itself is a "warning" signal. You only tell them to return for refund - unless you want to complete a Postal Insurance (if it was shipped priority) in which if they have not supplied photographs - they should hold all items for postal inspection. However, since they told you THEY damaged it upon opening - it may not be inthe same condition once it is shipped back to you and of course that leads into another interesting matter.
Bottom LIne - they wanted a partial - for their fault in damaging an item, one THEY were willing to "overlook" for their fault if you paid them money to. Instead you want return for refund - NOW the ball is in their court - they may NEVER send any pictures to you - no requirement to - JUST STATE If not satisfied - Return Item for refund (yes, you will eat this listing cost and shipping - not sure if they would have to pay for the shipping since they admitted damaging the item while opening it).
ONCE you receive the said item, then they get a refund and NOT before - DO NOT agree to a Partial - since they damaged it upon opening the package.

Nothing.
The buyer has admitted to damaging the item. Hopefully that is in ebay messages.
Do nothing unless they open a case. If they open one immediately report them. Then call CS and have them read the message in which they confess to damaging the item. Only talk to a USA rep hang up on the rest and call back. Find one with a brain that will close the case in your favor immediately while you are on the phone.

Since the Buyer damaged the item.
You as the seller are not obligated to issue a refund or receive a return of the item.
People do need to take responsibility for their own actions.

The buyer wants a refund and then send the item back - at your expense of course.
Call a store clothing, hardware, other and tell them you damaged the goods and want a refund on your credit card and that you'll drop off the item next time your in the neighborhood or they can send someone to pick it up.
Tongue in cheek almost - tell the buyer you cut yourself packaging the item and it took 4 stitches to treat it. That you'll will refund the purchase they damaged after they send you $250 for your trip to the emergency room.

Damaged in what way? How did you pack?
I've received items crammed so tight in the pacakge it was nearly busting the seams and took a lot of effort to open without damage.

Exactly. I have received packages where the contents were crammed in so tight, that I have damaged the item trying to get it out.
Some sellers feel if it fits, it ships. Just because you managed to get it into the package, does not mean a buyer will be successful getting it out.

I actually just went out and bought a box for an item I sold yesterday because all of the boxes I had were too snug and didn't allow enough clearance on all sides. Yes, technically it fit into the ones I had, but there would have been zero room for padding and I'm not comfortable shipping anything like that.
