Buyer claiming that I put books in an Ipad Box and I don't know what to do HELP

So I listed a Macbook pro as an auction the past week and someone bid a little higher than market price at the last moment, which I thought was a little suspicious. I sent it yesterday but today I woke up to a return claim where the person said, "This guy sent me an iPAD BOX WITH BOOKS inside of it !! THIS IS NOT THE ITEM I ORDERED, I WANT MY FULL REFUND NOW".

Ebay said to accept the return for now and file a false buyer claim after. I am scared because everywhere I am reading that seller do not have a good chance of appealing the refund. What should I do from here? How can I prove to Ebay that I sent a Macbook pro? All I have is photos of the sealed laptop.

Actually I stand by my statement as well as the fact that this has been a published fact.

And I would predict that in 20 years or less, Amazon will be running the USPS.

Quite agree USPS reported a $9.2 billion loss in 2020 and that will probably increase in 2021 and out. I can totally see Amazon maybe not running USPS but having a major federal contract to handle a sizable portion of the deliveries. Amazon placed an order with Rivian for 100,000 delivery vehicles that are due to be delivered over the next 8 years. All are electric powered vehicles. More recently they also partnered with Stellantis on vehicle dashboard software and cloud services.

There is no point in pictures or videos.  eBay does not accept any of that if/when a buyer claims item not as described.  And that "final pic of the packaged item with label" doesn't help either.  How does anyone know you sent the package?  And why would eBay investigate the buyer?

Just curious:  How would filing a police report help?

@soh.maryl

If the seller had insurance to cover his loss, sometimes insurance companies require the insured to file a police report, with a sworn statement.  I doubt the OP is insured, but in theory the police could investigate and file criminal theft charges against the buyer, if, and this is a big if, the evidence showed there was a theft.

How, exactly, would the local PD prove there was a theft?

And eBay needs to give all sellers the option to cancel up to three orders a year without a defect.  In this case buyer pays, you have to ship, but a gut feeling by the seller would have led them to cancel if they had that option.

Well, "theft" is a legal term.  In this case allegedly the buyer wrongfully purchased a computer by deceiving the seller  into sending him the computer but the "buyer" had no intention of paying.  This could be considered "theft by conversion".   If the police gathered evidence and decided what the OP is claiming is true, they would have "proof" to file charges.  If the buyer denied the charge, then a jury would have to hear the evidence and decide if the evidence amounted to "proof".

   With all the talk here of trying to help the OP and lessen the preventable heartbreak of outright theft, let's get something straight:

   Innocent sellers like the OP do not join eBay to have to play whack-a-mole with scammers, ending up with having to file police reports, FBI reports, USPS intercepts and complaints, fighting an automatic losing battle with cc chargeback refunds even after months down the road, getting a box of rocks or the buyer's old broken item as a switcheroo return (and then being forced to refund), documenting, photographing and videotaping shipments to no avail, multiple devious and very shrewd successful shipping scams, and having to deal with eBay's Customer-No-Service from reps that do not speak clearly or with an accurate knowledge of eBay's own policies. This results in the loss of the seller's item in addition to their payment for it on a buyer refund forced by eBay.  - No wonder there is a sour storm cloud on the outlook for the future of online selling.

   Seller Protections has become a joke, with fewer high-value items being listed. Months ago, it took only about 10 seconds for me to come up with a recommendation that eBay put into place some form of optional  anti-scammer insurance for a small % fee. I believe that would instill more confidence in sellers to go ahead and list their higher-value items, bringing in a lot more profits to both sellers and eBay. The fees on these listings would boost eBay's own bottom line. Think of the money eBay is losing by wise sellers not listing their high-value items because of no seller protections with teeth in them against the exponential rise of scam buyers.

   I have a lot of high-value items that I would list here if it was safe to do so. But I currently have to limit listing them to a value of no more than $80. A lot of other wise sellers are in the same boat.

Cheers, Duffy

eBay sees that you are willing to go the legal route which would end up costing them more and instead they just fork over the money.
