Hello.
I sold an item with free shipping. The buyer paid and I shipped it.
While in transit, the buyer noticed that his address with eBay is outdated and USPS is sending it back to me.
I received the item back.
Now I need to reship it to the buyer. However, I'm not paying shipping twice to get this in their hands for their mistake. I need to collect $16.25 from the buyer to reship but eBay does not seem to have a way for me to collect additional money from the buyer.
How can I collect this $16.25 from the buyer to reship? Thanks.

Hello,My thought would be,work this out of course with the buyer and explain you will re-list this item for
$16.25 free shipping,There fore the buyer will make the purchase with no additional cost
The actual purchase price will be for the shipping you need
Explain this to the buyer,I think that would be simple enough,Unless there is another way
Hope this helps

The only draw back on my last post would be a fee incurred since it would be another sale recorded by e-bay

The Ebay MBG is no longer valid, same as when a buyer does not pickup an item at their local post office. Upon return of the item one can refund less your fees and then relist. But one must very gently inform the buyer of the situation as, if they are a real petty person, they can always do a chargeback. And in a chargeback scenario it is uncertain whether Ebay will have your back.

Explain to buyer and refund. Relist with the shipping you paid and other associated fees added to the price.

Once the seller receives the item back they can refund the buyer for the total cost - (shipping cost and fees). If the buyer wants to repurchase the item seller can simply relist and buyer can re-purchase, after they fix their mailing address.

you need to cancel this as a problem with buyer address which is the truth
wrong address will bring out pettiness like nothing else can
buyers will try to get you to believe that you are in the wrong because of a mistake that they made
please do not buy into that line of baloney

E-Bay wants you to refund the original shipment (btw, if the shipping was free and it made it back to you, you are not supposed to deduct the shipping, but refund the Buyer in full)
You would then create a "new" listing, w/o free shipping and the Buyer would then purchase it a 2nd time. Buyer can leave FB then for 2 transactions if they purchase again. I would report the buyer on the 1st transaction to notate for e-Bay the Buyer error.
Good luck!

Something similar happened to me recently, and the buyer said he would repay through PayPal. But you can’t include email addresses in messages. So in seller hub I archived the item then went to archived items, and their email address was listed there next to their name. Then I used that email address to request money at PayPal. This worked for me.

Why would a seller refund the buyer in full for a mistake the buyer made. There is no reason the seller should have to absorb shipping costs and fees for an error made by the buyer. Under the exclusions of the MBG the buyer is no covered if they provide an incorrect address. Seller actually does not have to refund anything but it is of course the correct thing to do, minus the sellers expenses.

No, the seller will then lose money. Fees, time, first shipping cost paid....

No, still bad. Seller pays fees twice, plus the shipping cost they are out.
eBay, do you really not have a way to do this??
You could invoice the buyer through Paypal, if you still have it, for the new shipping cost. It would cost you a Paypal fee, but that's less than eBay. Or Venmo or anything else you accept and then reship.

Once you have had a completed transaction with a buyer you can exchange contact information.
Ask the buyer for their PayPal email address and send them an invoice or provide the buyer with yours.
At this point in time most eBay buyers will still have an active PayPal account.
Into your life it will creep

No the seller will not loose those costs. If they issue a refund and only issue a partial the total cost of the transaction - shipping costs and fees. As others mentioned communication with the buyer is important regarding the refund once they have the item back. Seller would have some protection if the buyer opens a INR case but probably not much if the buyer opens a chargeback.

You are correct, a Seller does.
We have been to this rodeo. If you offered free shipping and the parcel is return to you (regardless of reason) e-Bay expects you as a seller to refund the buyer IN FULL as the shipping was FREE. You cannot withold it from the Buyer as the buyer Never paid the shipping to begin with and a Seller's fees are THEIR fees, not the Buyer's fees.
As I stated above - e-Bay expects you to handle a Return on the 1st transaction and create a new transaction for the Buyer. You cannot withhold from a Buyer anything they did not pay. If the shipping was "Free", the Buyer did not pay for shipping.
