I would like to know how to list a book lot where a buyer can pick and choose from a drop-down menu.

Thank-you!

Variation listings require items to be in the same physical condition.

Generally speaking, you'll want to group by something that ties items together. For example, all Harry Potter on one listing, or all Agatha Christie on another listing, or all science-fiction on another listing. A hodge podge of random books on the same listing will make it hard to find in search for the buyers looking to purchase those items.

Also, you cannot set up different shipping rates for different variations so all books on the listing should be similar size/weight.

-----

Variations are not supported on the app. Make sure you're using the website. Variations are not supported for auction format listings; make sure you're using fixed price.

By default the variation setting is hidden on the listing form. Once you unhide the setting it will stick for future listings.

On the top right of the page click the settings menu (3 vertical dots) and toggle the variations slider if it's not already on.

Make sure you're working off a new listing, not a relist or sell similar from a listing without variations.

Beyond that it comes down to category; not every category supports variations.

If the category supports variations you'll find them in a non-intuitive, awkward placement on the listing form - below item specifics instead of above them. Make sure you set up variations before you fill out any of the item specifics.

I don't recommend it for most use cases.  It's not very user friendly, either to you setting it up (sometimes it's actually more work than just making individual listings), or to the buyers.

What types of books are listing that you think it would be good for?  Do they each have their own ISBN, or is it like books from a set that don't have individual ISBNs?

The Variations format is intended for items that vary only by specific characteristics such as the size or color of a clothing item.  It is not intended for listing completely different items such as books with different titles. Your books should be listed separately.

You have rec’d solid advice from the other respondents.

See link below for more info regarding eBay’s policy on multi-quantity and variation listings.

eBay relaxed that policy for media (link), however I generally agree with you and brightlight that variations are a bad idea for books and other media unless they are (a) all the same condition as required and (b) grouped together appropriately - such as books in the same series.

Because item specifics require things like "author," and that's not something where you can select multiple names, it's too confusing for the buyer to post an assortment in the same listing. As mentioned in my first post, it can also create issues with target buyers even finding the listing in search.

It can work but only for certain types of related books in the same condition.

I usually see it used for large groups of books by publishers like Easton Press. Their leatherbound books are manufactured collectibles and often remain unread and in essentially new condition.  A variation listing works in that case, since buyers can look over the options and pick up titles they don't have. But I generally agree with the advice above: Individual listings are usually better.

Books should have their own listings so you can give good descriptions of each book.

Have a great day.
