Would it matter if it was? A buyer could just put a question mark or something in the field to meet the requirement for a comment.
It doesn't matter what the buyer's reason is for the bid retraction, only the fact that they needed to retract the bid.
An explanation would not change anything.

Yes, but I wanted to see the "entered the wrong amount" comment.

Why? What purpose does it serve? It wouldn't change anything. It certainly wouldn't mean it was the truth of the matter either.

That's interesting. Message states only you and the bidder can see the explanation, BUT you can't see the explanation. Conflicting information there, certainly. Perhaps they have phased the ability for the seller to see the reason why out.

And another one? You can't blame them. Just too much money to be squandering.

Perhaps Ebay has backed away from just the limited three reasons for bid retractions and that is why they aren't showing the reason anymore. Also, the limited three reasons had qualifiers that may not be used. Incorrect bid may not have another bid made. There may not have been a change in anything in the listing, and they may not have tried to contact the seller.

Just not fair to sellers to have bidders retract with no action by ebay, many buyers look at the bid price and move on if high only to have the bid retracted days later, and price goes back to 99c, not in this case but had to deal with that.

I understand and agree. It's a misuse of bid retraction and cheating besides if it is used to uncover a max bid, IMO. and it is auction interference. But I've seen the attitude in threads by those that think this is acceptable because they keep doing it with impunity.

It’s not a free write field, retractors are given a short list of choices.
Many call it the “pick a lie” form.
It should display the choice, though - welcome to a new glitch.
Who knows if it’s harmless or not? Even when it seems so, what else is it connected to?

What is so confusing? The seller decided to cancel your bid. He doesn't want to sell to bidders who have zero feedback. Then to ensure that you could not purchase from him, he put your ID on his "Blocked bidders list" so that when you tried to bid again you would not be able to. You will have to find a different seller.

Zero feedback and cancelled?
I’d call EBay and report the seller. Great way to welcome new people, and not how the feature is supposed to be used.
