Bad experience and need to vent

So, I sold a Pokémon Platinum DS game. The buyer received the game 4 days later. He immediately told eBay that it was a fake/scam and wanted a refund.  It was not a fake, the game has been in my possession since I bought it from the store new. eBay’s policy allows him a month to return it to me for refund. Which he took full advantage of, he waited 22 days before he took it to the post office to return it to me. The reason he waited so long was he was playing the game and only returned it to be within the one month due date. I made the full refund to him without question, because I want to be a “Great Seller” and keep my  100% positive feedback. This transaction, put my funds on hold, I had to pay return shipping cost and wait one month to get my game returned. Why does it seem there is no protection/regard for the Seller. This experience has got me questioning whether I want to continue using EBay. Just needed to vent

Go right ahead. I tend to get snarky with people who come into this with unrealistic expectations but in this case you did everything right. Unfortunately you can run up against people who abuse the privilege - and you found one. Be sure to put him on your Blocked Buyer List.

This is reported a lot for game categories and scammers are common. In this case it sounds like you had someone who was looking for a free rental. The funds on hold thing is a pain but to be honest - at least it ensured that you had funds available to refund because the buyer would win anyway.

Game systems are a rough category to sell in. If you can find items in other areas to sell instead you will probably have less trauma to deal with from numpty buyers. Good luck and hang in there.

Those are the rules of eBay's MBG. Will this happen all the time? Likely not. But could it? Yes.

You should be happy you got the game back at all, and not a rock or empty box, because that happens. And in that situation, you STILL have to refund the buyer.

Still think it's a good idea to sell online?

@erhar_4978 Your frustration is understood and shared by many. It's always difficult to sell anything online to a perfect stranger from another state. In situations such as this I always point out that you should concentrate on the fact that you got your item back undamaged. It wasn't brand new, never opened, and the shipping was under $10. Your funds were on hold, but you got them eventually.

You could sell the game to someone else, if it sold once it will sell again. The next buyer will be the right person to purchase the game. Try to put this behind you and concentrate on selling your other items. You did nothing wrong here and handled this correctly and professionally. These things happen but your story had a good enough ending to it. Best of luck to you....

I am sorry but the way eBay caters to buyers means they have no problem reading a book and returning it, wearing your gown to the wedding and returning it, copy your CD and return it,,,,,,,,,,,, you get the picture.

Block the buyer.

Also report the buyer for abusing the return system.

I would report that buyer.  I bet he does it very frequently to get to play games for free.  Report him for abuse of the EBAY MBG  program.    Selling games is risky here.  Hopefully the game still works and you can resell it.  Make sure that you report this buyer and also block them from buying.
