Authentication??? Don't Recall Signing Up

This is something new to me because I seldom have a sale. However, one of my jewelry  listings sold and it is going to be shipped to EBay authentication center where it will be examined before going to buyer. When did this come about? Is this something being offered to buyers automatically and who is responsible for paying for that service?

So if you did an auction starting at .01 and the highest bid was $499. and it went for $500.+ I assume there would be no authentication because it's an auction under $500.?

Yeah, my thinking, as well! Just another ploy for EBay to line their pockets.

I don't know if you've read the policy that someone linked above, but you might find it offers some benefits to you as the seller.

In any event, you'll have to price your items accordingly to avoid authentication in the future.

Re: Authentication??? Don't Recall Signing Up

It’s actually a very good deal for sellers and buyers - because it instills confidence in the potential buyer - that they will get what they expected. This is important in higher priced pieces, and of particular importance with brands that have a lot of fakes.

For the seller - it insures that the buyer cannot claim NAD, cannot do a something scammy like a switch + return, nor can they claim they got an empty box.

Sounds like just more chance of it getting lost in the mail and a way for EBay to make a little more cash off of the deal.

Ebay doesn't make any more money from the sale of AG items than they would if there wasn't an authenticity guarantee.

The service is free and if your item qualifies for the AG program, you can't opt out or find a workaround.

As long as there's tracking showing delivery (and if applicable) to the authenticator, you're protected against any claims. (Returns are based on sellers' return policy.)

They will surely have buyers willing to pay for authentication even when it is not required. That's how they make a little extra.

I disagree. If the item doesn't qualify for the free authentication by ebay, there's no reason for the buyer to pay extra for it since they have their MBG. They'll have 30 days from receipt of the item to verify authenticity and if deemed fake, they can file a NAD (not as described) claim.

Re: Authentication??? Don't Recall Signing Up

Yeah well, some of the authenticators are seriously thick as mud. I just had a gold bracelet rejected because it had “repairs.” It’s never been repaired, as 3 professional jewelers have stated on paperwork. It’s in dispute now. I also previously had a pair of earrings rejected as fakes, disputed that, and they were deemed to be authentic by another assessor. This “benefit” is an absolute joke.

Re: Authentication??? Don't Recall Signing Up

I purchased a pair of new shoes..

They were around 135$ a pair

Problem is this authentication process is taking way too long.

I don't think people will put up with this for long.

Especially when the so called "savings" people think they will get from eBay purchases really isn't much of at all .

I think I will be purchasing things at the local store. Takes me 30 minutes and I know it's authentic...

Plus I can easily return it..

Not necessarily authentic.........  fraudsters buy orig ones, return fake ones.......clerks don't know any different, so the fakes can end up sold at stores.....

Re: Authentication??? Don't Recall Signing Up

Many sellers are unable to relate to the buyers who value the authentication process, and even if they might be able to know real from fake will want the opinion of an experts.

It is hard to find a room full of experts who will agree on anything, and there are multiple people doing Ebay authentication.

Given Ebay's reputation for sleeze and schlock which goes back to its beginning, was deserved in its early years and mostly undeserved now, authentication is a good thing and benefits this site,

Re: Authentication??? Don't Recall Signing Up

Nice try , deflecting the problem.. the problem is not my local store..

It's eBay .

I just purchased a new pair of shoes at the store today because the shoes I purchased on eBay is still sitting in some warehouse waiting to be "authenticated".

Who ever came up with this full re*ard idea should be fired..

Noone should be forced to wait for weeks to get something they paid good money for..

And the sellers are going to hurt because they will lose more sales..

Way to go eBay!

Another big fail!
